BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURE PROGRAM (BSA)

FIRST SEMESTER AY 2022 – 2023

AGRI 0811 – SEMINAR A
BSA 3 – CROP SCIENCE

Name of Organizer : Angelika U. Abayon

Title : Hydroponics of Lettuce Production

Target Beneficiary : Farmers and Volunteer in Bilolo

Duration : 2 Days Morning and Afternoon in (2-3 hours)

Name of Committees : Agricultural Municipality of Orion, Municipality of

Agricultural Units

Project Description : Hydroponics refers to the technique of growing plants without soil
and instead placing roots in a nutrient solution. It is commonplace
to include soilless culture in the definition of hydroponics, but
understanding the difference is important. Soilless culture can be
defined as “growing of plants in an inorganic substance or an
organic material and periodically watered with a nutrient solution”
and includes various types of plant production systems such as bag
culture, Dutch bucket culture, and rockwool culture, among others.
Hydroponics, strictly defined, allows for no substrate or rooting
media and includes techniques such as raft culture, including Deep
Water Culture (DWC) and deep flow culture (DFC), nutrient film
technique (NFT), and several variations of each. Hydroponics is a
highly exacting and demanding system that requires a greater
amount of production knowledge, experience, technical skill and
financial investment than many other greenhouse systems. A
grower must be committed to meeting the daily demands of
production to be successful. While there are a number of different
hydroponic systems that have been commercially successful for
lettuce production, this profile will focus on the nutrient film
technique and the floating raft method. Prospective growers should
obtain as much information as they can about hydroponic
production before entering into this type of enterprise.

Objectives : The objective of this work was to protect a system for producing
hydroponic lettuce and analysis its technical and economic
feasibility, aiming to supply snacks bars of Pelotas, with a
minimally processed product ( washed and cut lettuce).
 To enhance control and efficiency in crop production
 Create a sustainable impact in our community
 Produce the higher yield of crops
 Create a sustainable livelihood programs in hydroponics
production
