Week 001: Volleyball
What is Volleyball?
• Played by two teams of six players.
• Objective is to volley the ball in the two different
sides of the courts over a net.
• The game makes use of the players’ agility, use of
hands, reaching, hitting and jumping skills.
• The game starts with a service decided by a coin toss
in which the winning team chooses the side of the
court they’ll serve in.
• Rally point system is used in scoring with every fault
is equal to a point.

History of Volleyball
• The game started in 1895 at YMCA, Holyoke,
Massachusetts, USA by William J. Morgan.
• Inspired by tennis but makes use of hands instead of
rackets.
• The first name of volleyball was “Mintonette”
• In 1932, Dr. Alfred S. Halsted, a YMCA professor,
raised the popularity of the game by renaming the
game to volleyball.
• The game’s rules were developed from 1935 to
1960s by different organizations and associations.

History of Volleyball
• The rules for women’s volleyball was published in
1924.
• This game is included in the Philippine curriculum in
1910 with the help of Elwood Brown.
• The first game of volleyball played in the Olympics
was in 1964 in Tokyo, Japan.
Equipment
• The Ball
• Made up of flexible or synthetic leather case with
a rubber bladder.
• Has a circumference of 65-67 cm and weigh 260-
280 grams.
• It can be in an all-light color or a tri-color
combination.

• Made up of strong cotton or nylon strings.
• The strand is 3mm thick. With the net having an
8cm x 8cm mesh.
• The length is 9.5 m and the width is 1 m and 0.25
m on both ends.
• The height of the net for men is 2.43 m, 2.24 m for
women and 2.13 m for much younger player.
Equipment
• The Post and Antennae
• The posts are placed at a distance of 0.5 m to 1 m
beyond sidelines.
• The height is 2.55 m high which is preferably
adjustable.
• The post is made up of strong wood or steel tube
with a circumference of 8 cm to 2.45 m.
• The antennae is 1.8 m long and 10 mm in
diameter, made up of fiber glass or same as the
post..

• A rectangular court divided into two 9 m halves.
• 18 m sidelines and 9 m endlines mark the
boundaries of the court.
• The court should be flat and has an additional
area to serve as an extended part of the court.
• The endline serves as a service area.

Scoring
• The system of scoring is rally point, this means for
every violation of a team, the opponent scores a
point.
• The first team to make 25 points wins a set.
• In the case of a deuce or 24 all, the first team to score
2 consecutive points win.
• If another deuce occurs, another advantage point will
be decided.
