1. Vague & Ambiguous Writing

Akule wrote a persuasive essay on the American immigration system. However, his teacher gave him a low
grade on the rough draft and provided feedback on how the final version could be better. Most of the teacher's
comments pointed out how some of the sentences were vague and ambiguous, which keeps persuasive writing
from being effective.

Vague writing occurs when it's unclear what the author means. However, ambiguous writing happens when
what's written is clear but could have several meanings.

These statements from Akule's essay were marked by the teacher for being vague or ambiguous:

 Vague writing: ''Migrating can be hard for aliens."

 Ambiguous writing: ''Many people believe that the immigration system should be reformed.''

In the vague writing example, the reader can't be sure what type of migration is being referred to or what
definition of aliens is being used. The second sample is ambiguous because the audience doesn't know what
people believe this or what immigration system is being discussed.

 Consequences of Such Writing

Akule's teacher also shared that vague and ambiguous writing hurts persuasive writing because it prevents the
essay's arguments from having strength. Without strong arguments, no one will be convinced to accept the
writer's viewpoint. Including vagueness and ambiguity weakens the author's position and hinders people from
trusting in what the writing says.

In the previous two examples from Akule's essay, not knowing what types of migration or aliens are being
referred to distract the reader from focusing on the main points. Also, many people believing that the
immigration system should be reformed isn't enough since it's not clear if those making the claim can be trusted.

Vague writing: ''Migrating can be hard for aliens.''Ambiguous writing: ''Many people believe that the
immigration system should be reformed.''

In the vague writing example, the reader can't be sure what type of migration is being referred to or what
definition of aliens is being used. The second sample is ambiguous because the audience doesn't know what
