Supply Chain Modelling and Simulation 55-703939

Department of Engineering & Mathematics

55-703939 – Supply Chain Modelling and Simulation Module

Assignment 1: Critical review of the literature

Group Task:

How simulation and optimisation techniques/methods can be used

to design a closed-loop supply chain.

Task Overview
In recent years, designing the closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) as one of the
important configurations of the circular economy (CE) has received considerable
attention in sustainability matters. In this assignment, you are asked to
investigate how simulation and optimisation methods can be contributed to
designing a closed-loop supply chain.
It is suggested that you follow the structure below. A guide to the word count
(excluding references) is also included for each section. The reference list must be
provided by the end of your report.

Marking Scheme
Section 1 10%
Section 2 40%
Section 3 20%
Section 4 10%
Layout and Presentation/ Development of a 20%
coherent theme throughout the report

Deadline: Monday, 06 March 2023 15:00 pm (NO EXTENSION)

Please note the attached generic Level 7 Assessment Rubric.

Report Structure:
Section 1 - Introduction
Give a general introduction to the below topics for a broad audience:
 Closed-loop supply chain
 Closed-loop supply chain design
* Word limit: 200 words

Section 2 – The Role of Mathematical Approaches in Designing a Closed-

Loop Supply Chain
 Critically review the literature that used optimisation
methods/techniques/models to design a closed-loop supply chain.
 Critically review the literature that used simulation
methods/techniques/models to design a closed-loop supply chain.

*Word limit: 1000 words

Section 3 – Case Study

 Demonstrates with a help of a real case study where simulation OR/AND
optimisation methods/techniques have been applied to design a closed-loop
supply chain.
* Word limit: 500 words

Section 4 – Conclusions & Finding

Conclude the above discussion by outlining which mathematical approaches have
received more attention in the literature review to design closed-loop supply chains,
what would be your recommendation along with your justification?
* Word limit: 300 words

Group Formation:
This assignment is to be carried out in groups of ideally 5 students (with a minimum
of 4 students). This is your responsibility to form your group by Week 27. Your tutor
will collect your group information during the session. Please make sure you are
attending your tutorial session and you must form your group only from your tutorial
session. It is strongly recommended that you establish contact with all members of
your group as soon as possible. You must work together and contribute equally to
the task.

Note: The deadline for forming a group is week 27 (NO EXTENSION)

Contribution:

All members of the group are expected to contribute equally to the task of analysing
research and preparing the report. You must work together on all aspects of the task.
Whilst group meetings are encouraged to discuss and exchange ideas, it is strongly
advised that you also use the group discussion boards, Google docs or similar online
portal systems to work on this task. This will assist with construction, compilation and
thus contribution and will improve access and communication between group
members.

There would be a milestone in week 29 to discuss your progress/ issues with your
tutor during the tutorial session. If you encounter difficulties with your group, inform
your tutor in a progress review session. It is an opportunity for you to develop your
management, leadership, influencing and interpersonal skills. Groups that work well
together generally tend to get better marks.

Drafting Your Work

There is a folder in the assessment tab of the Bb site that will help with drafting your
work. This includes links to assignment samples, referencing, plagiarism and
draft Turnitin submission points. You can submit drafts to the 'Draft Turnitin
Submission Point' as many times as you like to check your work. I suggest only
one member of the group be responsible to upload the work in the both main
and draft Turnitin submission point .
Hand In
Your final group report: Submission must be submitted electronically via both the
“001 Written Assignment - Submission Point” and the 'Turnitin' submission point
marked 'Task 1 Turnitin Submission Point'. These can both be found on the
blackboard module site in the assessment tab. The file should be uploaded by one
member of the group and the file must include:
Tutorial number and group number at the beginning of the file name
i.e. "Tutorial 6-1-SUPPLY CHAIN MODELLING AND SIMULATION". Please upload
your work as a word document and ensure all names of group members are included
in the report and formatting is correct before submission.
Support
Your lecturer/tutor will be available to discuss your progress and to provide some
direction with your research. This will be provided at class tutorials, by prior

arrangement to meet with the lecturer, or by e-mail response within 3 working days
of your request.
