Glossary: Classification of nutrients, Recommended Dietary Allowances

Food Guide – A guide to help individuals to select food so as to meet their


nutritional needs.
Legumes – Pod or fruit of peas and beans.
Millet – Small grain of Indian cereal, edible seeds of grass family which are small
in size.
Nutrient – A substance essential for the growth, maintenance , function and
reproduction of a cell or organism.
Vitamin – Organic compounds occurring in minute amounts in foods and
essential for numerous metabolic reactions.
