Amy is very bright, ambitious, newly hired by her law firm. She wants
control of the firm’s website. She shows up late to the restaurant for a
lunch meeting with ERIC DAVIS, hotshot -- and just plain hot --
intellectual property lawyer. He's very hiply dressed, more like a
wealthy internet genius with taste than a lawyer, but Amy's too
distracted by her problems to notice his looks.
AMY
Thank you for meeting me outside
of the office. I'm feeling a little
paranoid lately.
DAVIS
Understandable. I've looked over
your contract...(light dig) with the
relevant sections highlighted, of course.
AMY
(not ironic)
I thought it'd save you time.
(re: contract)
How does it look?
DAVIS
The language is out of date, the
intellectual property clauses are
without great clarity, which allows
for varied interpretations...
AMY
That sounds positive.
DAVIS
Did you work on the website during
office hours?
AMY
I suppose I occasionally thought
about it once or twice while I was
at the office, but, basically no.
DAVIS
I can make a strong case for you
being the total owner of your site.
Amy smiles.
DAVIS (CONT'D)
But I'd rather not.
(off her face)
Lawyers make lousy clients. They're
always trying to do my job.
AMY
I wouldn't --
DAVIS
(with humour)
Really? Why do I find that hard to believe?
AMY
Maybe you're afraid of being challenged.
DAVIS
There's nothing I like better.
Amy smiles.
DAVIS (CONT'D)
And, you'd have to promise to avoid
arguing your own case at work, not
make any sudden moves without talking
to me first --
AMY
I'll try, okay?
(with humour)
That’s the best I can do.
DAVIS
All right. I'll draft a letter stating
our position that you are total owner
of the website. The partners will
get it later today.
I
The Waiter returns, putting the BILL between them; they both reach for it.
Davis takes the check gently from Amy pointedly.
DAVIS (CONT'D)
Don't worry. I'm billing you.
