5. Three loads, of 22A, 11A and 5.5A are supplied from a 220V source. If a motor of
resistance 24Ω is also connected across the supply, calculate (a) the total resistance
and (b) the total current drawn from the supply. (Ans. 4.61, 47.7A)

6. The lamps in a set of Christmas tree lights are connected in series; if there are 20
lamps and each lamp has a resistance of 25Ω, calculate (a) the total resistance of the
set of lamps, (b) the current taken from a 220V supply, (c) the electrical energy are
consumed in watt-hour if the set of lamps are operated 8 hours for a day, and hence
(d) the amount of payment if the set of lamps was operated 30 days and the electric
company charges $1.6 per kilowatt-hour.

7. A coil of 20Ω resistance is joined in parallel with a coil of R ohms resistance. This
combination is then joined in series with a piece of apparatus A, and the whole circuit
connected to 110V mains. What must be the value of R so that apparatus A shall
dissipate 600W with 10A passing through it? (Ans. 6.67)

8. A lamp rated with 220V, 0.5A which is to be connected in series with a resistor across
a 240V supply. Determine the resistor value required for the lamp to operate as its
correct voltage.

can be connected (a) in series, (b) in parallel, or (c) using one part only. Calculate the
current drawn from a 220V supply for each connection.

10. When four identical hotplates on a cooker are all in use, the current drawn from a
220V supply is 20A. Calculate (a) the resistance of each hotplate, (b) the current
drawn when only three plates are switched on. The hotplates are connected in
parallel.
