Movie: Jenderal Soedirman (2015)

First of all let me introduce you to Jenderal Sudirman. Jenderal Sudirman is a hero (pahlawan) of our
country Indonesia who was born in Purbalingga, Jawa Tengah on January 24 th 1916. This movie
“Jenderal Sudirman” shown in movies in 2015 tells the life story of Jenderal sudirman since he was a kid
until his closing age. This story mainly focuses on Jenderal Sudirman’s journey fighting for the rights of
the Indonesia citizen and to fight for the independence of our country, Indonesia.

At the opening there was a voting to be the commander-in-chief (panglima besar tentara national
republic Indonesia]in which Urit Sumoharjo won but suddenly a messenger brought a message from the
division commander and the commander from Sumatra that Soedirman is the one who should be the
commander-in-chief for Indonesia.

The conflict of this movie is the Dutch one-sidedly broke the Renville agreement and also something to
do with weapons. The Dutch also claimed that Indonesia did not have any sovereignty. Because of that
General Simons Spoor who as a chief of staff of the Royal Netherland East Indies Army and Royal Dutch
army led military aggression 2 by attacking the capital of Indonesia on December 19 th 1948 in
Yogyakarta.

This war or aggression happened 2 years after Indonesia’s independence although the Dutch military
returned to Indonesia in March and April 1946 which is 8 months after Indonesia’s independence. This
war is called “Perang Gerilya” or guerrilla war in Java.

Jenderal Soedirman suffered from lung disease during the war but he still continued to lead the war and
to fight for his country Indonesia, fighting for guerilla war. In the end of the movie Jeneral Sudirman
made Jawa turn into a large battlefield which made the Dutch lose their supplies, people, facilities and
also time and so Indonesia won the battle and they proved that Indonesia is united and therefore the
Netherlands recognize Indonesia’s sovereignty.
