To solve difficult problems, the computer system has a logical program. The

characteristics of the computer make it fast and powerful. A computer with advanced

capabilities can execute and perform 3 to 4 million basic commands per second. The

characteristics or features of a computer are illustrated in the graphic below.

1. List three (3) features of computer systems and explain each.

The speed and power of computers allow them to handle complex tasks such as data

analysis, graphic design, and video editing with ease, making them an essential tool in

many industries. Advancements in technology have led to the development of smaller

and more portable computers that can be used on-the-go. These components work

together to determine the overall performance and functionality of a computer system.

The efficiency of a computer depends on its processor, memory, storage, and other

hardware components. Additionally, the software and operating system also play a

crucial role in determining the capabilities of a computer.

One feature of the computer is the Speed. The speed of a computer is determined by

the processor and the amount of RAM it has, which affects how quickly it can perform

tasks and run programs. According to Tutorialspoint (2023), when performing

mathematical calculations, a computer works much faster and more precisely than a

human. One billion instructions can be processed by computers every second.

Computer operations take only a few nanoseconds or microseconds to complete. This

incredible speed is made possible by the use of transistors, which are tiny electronic

switches that can turn on and off billions of times per second. The development of faster

and more efficient processors has revolutionized the way we live, work, and

communicate in the modern world. This incredible speed allows computers to perform

complex tasks in a matter of seconds or minutes that would take humans hours or even

days to complete manually. However, the processing power of computers is limited by

the physical constraints of their hardware components.

To overcome these limitations, computer engineers are constantly developing new

technologies and optimizing existing ones to improve the performance and efficiency of

computers. These advancements have led to the development of faster processors,

more efficient cooling systems, and better storage solutions.

Another important feature is Storage capacity, which determines how much data can be

stored on the computer's hard drive or other storage devices. With the increasing

demand for data storage, the development of better storage solutions has become

crucial to ensuring that users can store their data securely and efficiently. Additionally,

the advancements in cooling systems have allowed for more powerful processors to be

used without overheating, resulting in faster and more efficient computing. According to

Tutorialspoint (2023), a computer has built-in memory called primary memory, where it

stores data. Secondary storage includes removable devices such as CDs, pen drives,

etc., which are also used to store data.

Primary memory is volatile, which means that it loses all data when the computer is

turned off, while secondary storage is non-volatile and can retain data even when the

computer is not powered. Primary memory is also known as RAM, which stands for

Random Access Memory, and it is used to temporarily store data and instructions that

the computer's processor needs to access quickly, while secondary storage devices like

hard drives and flash drives are used for long-term storage of data and files.

Lastly, the Diligence. A computer can perform millions of tasks or calculations with the

same consistency and accuracy. It doesn’t feel any fatigue or lack of concentration. Its

memory also makes it superior to that of human beings. Tutorialspoint (2023).

Computers have the ability to store and retrieve vast amounts of information quickly and

accurately, without the limitations of human memory. However, human beings possess

cognitive abilities that allow for creativity, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking that

computers are not yet capable of replicating. Artificial intelligence has the ability to store

and retrieve vast amounts of information quickly and accurately, without the limitations

of human memory capacity or potential errors in recall. However, human beings

possess unique cognitive abilities such as creativity, intuition, and emotional intelligence

that AI currently lacks. It is referred to as a diligent machine because it can perform the

same task repeatedly for an extended period of time without losing speed or accuracy.

Despite its efficiency, AI still cannot replace human creativity and emotional intelligence,

which are essential in fields such as art, music, and social interaction. Nevertheless,

AI's ability to perform repetitive tasks without fatigue or errors makes it a valuable tool in

industries such as manufacturing and data analysis.

2. In what way has ICT impacted you as a student and as an individual? Mention

some advantages of ICT and disadvantages of ICT.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) improves us, students' learning

opportunities, motivation, and success. The use of information and communication

technology (ICT) can help me develop critical job-related skills. Furthermore, ICT

enables me to access a vast amount of information from various sources, which can

enhance my research skills and broaden my knowledge base. Additionally, it provides

me with the opportunity to collaborate with peers and teachers from different parts of the

world, which can improve my communication and cultural awareness skills. ICT has

made learning more accessible and convenient with online resources and virtual

classrooms. As an individual, ICT has transformed the way I communicate, work, and

access information on a daily basis.

ICT enables me to finish my academic assignments quickly. As a student, I think that

learning ICT-related skills is necessary since it can make us more productive in our

academic performance. ICT has a variety of advantages for students, such as improving

communication channels, being more cost-effective, eliminating the need for paper

when using programs like Microsoft Word, being eco-friendly, improving teaching and

learning methods, and making student administration simple.

Students discovered learning in a technology-enhanced environment to be more

stimulating and engaging than in a traditional classroom environment after ICT was

introduced to schools. ICT plays a significant and prominent role in knowledge because

of its adaptability and ability to foster relationships between students. hom.blog (2019)

However, there are also some disadvantages of ICT for students like me. Such as the

potential for distraction and addiction to technology, the risk of cyberbullying and

exposure to inappropriate content, and the possibility of technical issues or malfunctions

disrupting learning. It is important for educators to address these concerns and promote

responsible use of technology. According to TheICTbook (2018), ICT provides many

benefits for us, but it also has drawbacks, such as being expensive because any school

that wants to provide a high-quality ICT education must purchase high-quality ICT

equipment. Sometimes class is interrupted because a student is using his phone or

tablet to play video games or do other things while the teacher is lecturing. This not only

disrupts the flow of the class but also hinders the learning process for both the

distracted student and their peers who may be affected by the disruption. Therefore, it is

important for students to be mindful of their technology use in class and prioritize their

education over distractions.
