Section A

1. True.
2. True.
3. X + 14 = 72.
4. Coefficient of x = 3
Coefficient of y = 4.
Constant = 5
5. True.

Section B

1. ⇒3x + 2y = k
⇒3(1) + 2(2) = k
⇒3 + 4 = k
⇒k = 7.
2. ⇒x - y = 2490
Let x = 5490
⇒5490 - y = 2490
⇒5490 - 2490 = y
⇒y = 3000.

3. Given that I have x chocolates.

Let y be the number of chocolates my friend has.
According to question, my friend has 4+2x chocolates.
Since y represents the number of chocolates my friend has, the required equation is
⇒y = 2x + 4.
Class 9 Linear Equations in Two Variables Mathematics

4. If the line represented by the equation 3x + 4y + c = 0 passes through the origin, then
the point (0,0) satisfies the equation.
Therefore, 3(0) + 4(0) + c=0
⇒c = 0.
5. 2x + 3y = 6
As we need to find the point where it touches the y-axis, x = 0.
⇒2(0) + 3y = 6
⇒0 + 3y = 6
⇒3y = 6
⇒y = 2.

Section C

1. The equation of the line passing through the point (-3, -7) and parallel to y-axis will be
x = -3.
Five more solution are:
⇒(-3, 1)
⇒(-3, 2)
⇒(-3, 3)
⇒(-3, 4)
⇒(-3, 5).
2. Equations of the lines are:
x–y=0 . . .(i)
x+y=0 . . .(ii)
Solving (i) and (ii), we get x = 0, y = 0
So, both the lines are concurrent at the origin.
The equation of X-axis is y = 0
Thus, the lines x - y =0, x + y = 0 and the X axis meet at the origin.
3. Because (2k - 1, k) is a solution of the equation 10x - 9y = 12
Substituting the value of x and y in the equation
⇒10(2k - 1) - 9k = 12
⇒20k - 10 - 9k = 12
⇒20k - 9k = 12 + 10
⇒11k = 22
⇒k = 2.
4. Let the total amount charged be y and number of days be x.
⇒Total amount = (Amount charged for first day) + [(Amount charged for total number of
days the book is kept - 1) x (Amount charged from second day onwards)]
⇒y = 5 + (x - 1)(1)
⇒y = 5 + (x - 1)
⇒y = 4 + x
Class 9 Linear Equations in Two Variables Mathematics

⇒y = 4 + 5
⇒y = 9
5. Let x and y be the number of chickens & goats respectively
Their headcount is 30.
so, x + y = 30 ....(i)
The total number of their legs is 84. A chicken has two legs whereas a goat has four
legs.
So, 2x + 4y = 84 .... (ii)
Multiplying equation (i) by 2, we get
⇒2x + 2y = 60 ....(iii)
Subtracting equation (iii) from (ii), we obtain
⇒2y = 24
⇒y = 12
Plugging this value of y in equation (i)
⇒x + 12 = 30
⇒x = 18
So, we get x = 18, y = 12
Therefore the ratio between the number of chickens & goats
x = 18 = 3 = 3 : 2.

y 12 2

Section D

1. Let A contibutes X rupees and B contributes Y rupees.

Then according to question,
X + Y = 100 ...........1
Put value of X = 0 in equation 1, we get
⇒y = 100
Put value of X = 50 in equation 1, we get
⇒50 + Y = 100
⇒Y = 100 - 50
⇒y = 50
Put value of X = 100 in equation 1, we get
100 + Y = 100
⇒Y = 100 - 100
⇒y = 0
So different solution of eqaution 1 is:
(0,100), (50,50), (100,0)
Class 9 Linear Equations in Two Variables Mathematics

2. Put, x = 0, we get y = 8
Put x = 3 we get y = 4 and
put x = 6 we get y = 0

(i) The coordinates of the points where this line intersects the x-axis and the y-axis are:
(0,8)(6,0)
(ii ) we have ∆ AOC,
With Base OC = 6 units, Height AO = 8 units,
We know that, A (∆ ABC) = ½ (Base) (Height)
∴ A(∆ AOC) = ½ (OC)(AO)
∴ A(∆ AOC) = ½ (6)(8)
Class 9 Linear Equations in Two Variables Mathematics

∴ A(∆ AOC) = 3 × 8 = 24
3. Path of the train A ⇒ 3x + 4y - 12 = 0
Path of the train B ⇒ 6x + 8y - 48 = 0
12−4 y
Now, 3x + 4y - 12 = 0 ⇒3x = 12 - 4y ⇒x =
3
If y = 0, then
12−4 (0) 12−0 12
x= = = =4
3 3 3
If y = 3, then
12−4 (3) 12−12 0
x= = = =0
3 3 3
Now plot the points (4, 0) and (0, 3) on the graph and join them to get a line.
48−8 y
Now, 6x + 8y - 48 = 0 ⇒6x = 48 - 8y ⇒x =
6
If y = 6, then
48−8(6) 48−48 0
⇒x = = = =0
6 6 6
If y = 3, then
48−8(3) 48−24 24
⇒x = = = =4
6 6 6
Now plot the points (0, 6) and (4, 3) on the graph and join them to get another line.

4. Present age of Aarushi = x years

and age of Ravish = y years
7 years ago, Age of Aarushi = x - 7 years
Therefore, y - 7 = 7 (x - 7)
⇒y - 7 = 7x - 49
Class 9 Linear Equations in Two Variables Mathematics

⇒7x - y = - 7 + 49 = 42
⇒y = 7x - 42
If x = 6, then
y = 7(6) - 42 = 42 - 42 = 0,
If x = 7, then
y = 7(7) - 42 = 49 - 42 = - 7
Plot the points (6, 0) (7, -7) on the graph and join them.
After 3 years, Age of Aarushi = x + 3
and age of Ravish = y + 3
⇒y + 3 = 3(x + 3)
⇒y + 3 = 3x + 9
⇒y = 3x + 9 - 3
⇒y = 3x + 6
If x = - 2, then y = 3(-2) + 6 = 6 - 6 = 0
If x = 1, then y = 3(1) + 6 = 3 + 6 = 9
Plot the points (1, 9), (-2, 0) on the graph and join them to get another line.

5. Speed of car = 60 km/hr

distance
Speed =
time
Let distance = y and time = x
y
⇒Speed= = 60
x
Class 9 Linear Equations in Two Variables Mathematics

⇒y = 60x
If x = 1, then y = 60(1) = 60
If x = 2, then y = 60(2) =120
Now plot the points (1, 60), (2, 120) and join them to get the graph of line.
From the graph, we see that

1
(i) Now if x = 2 \(2\frac{1}{2}\)
2
1 5
Then y = 60 (2 ) = 60( ) = 150
2 2
1
(ii) and if x =
2
1
Then y = 60( ) = 30.
