TYPES OF SPORTS

Sports are usually categorized according to the number of players participating on a

specified sporting event.

1. Individual
➢ Are games played by a single player against another. The term individual
came from the medieval latin word individualis where in means “not”
dividuus as “divisible”. In this kind of game, the individual competes against
his/her previous record or skills.

2. Dual Sports

➢ Are played by two allied players opposing another pair of players. The term
dual came from the Latin word duos or dualis, which basically means “two”.

Pros and Cons of Individual Sports

➢ Can be fun because you’re solely responsible for the outcome
➢ Performance rests on your shoulders and you receive all of the credit for victory
➢ Required a competitive spirit and a self-starting nature
➢ You have to compete without anyone beside you to take up the slack

On the opposite side:

➢ If you lose, allof the blame falls on you as an individual athlete
➢ You also don’t have teammate to lean on if you’re struggling or having a bad
performance
➢ It’s easier to discouraged when you’re the only athlete competing

Pros and Cons of Dual Sports

➢ Can be fun because of the camaraderie and teamwork involved in working
together as a team
➢ Dual teammates can encourage each other and play off each other to win
➢ One teammate can also bear the load when the other one is struggling or having
difficulty
➢ Dual sports require cooperation, so if you get along with your fellow athletes, you
do well in dual sports

On the opposite side:

➢ You have less control over the outcome when you’re relying on another teammate
➢ You can have your best individual performance and still lose the match or game in
a dual sport which is an important factor to remember
➢ You can also find the burden of a game or match failing on you if your teammate
is performing poorly or has a bad attitude

Individual and dual sports can be sub-categorized into several sports as shown below.

Badminton

Badminton is a racket sport played by either two

opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs
(doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of
a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players
score points by striking a shuttlecock with their

their opponents' half of the court. A rally ends once
the shuttlecock has struck the ground, and the
shuttlecock may only be struck once by each side
before it passes over the net.
Lawn Tennis

The lineage of modern lawn tennis can

be traced back to the years between
1859 – 1865, with inspirational
contributions stemming from games
such as – croquet and bowls. Harry
Gem along with his pal Augurio Perera
transmogrified and adapted the sport in
a unique manner on the latter’s croquet
court, in Birmingham, England.
