Cooling Towers

1. The following readings were taken at a particular operating conditions of a cooling

tower:
Water inlet temperature = 38.5oC
Water outlet temperature = 30.0oC
Water inlet flow rate = 3.0 kg/s
Air inlet dry bulb temperature =31.0oC
Air inlet wet bulb temperature = 27.0oC
Air outlet dry bulb temperature = 32.9 oC
Air outlet wet bulb temperature = 31.00C
Air mass flow rate = 5.6 kg/s
Determine
a. Wet-bulb approach temperature
b. Specific humidity of the air at inlet and outlet
c. Relative humidity of the air at inlet and outlet
d. Make-up water required as a percentage of the water flow rate at inlet
e. Heat lost by the water

2. Water enters a cooling tower @ 520C and leaves @ 380C. Air enters @ 29oC
and 50 % RH and leaves in a saturated condition @ 40 oC. Determine
a. the mass and volume of air needed per kg of water entering
b. the quantity of water that can be cooled by 1 cu m per second of air.
Atmospheric pressure is 102 KPa.

3. In a cooling tower 28.34 m3/min of air at 320C db and 24oC wb enter the tower and
leave saturated @29oC
a. To what temperature can the air stream cool a spray of water w/c enters
@ 38oC with a flow of 34 kg per min. of water?
b. How many kg per hr of make- up water is needed to compensate for the
water that is evaporated?

4. Fifty gallons per minute of water enters a cooling tower @ 46 o C. Atmospheric air
@160C and 55% RH enters the tower @ 2.85 cu m per second and leaves @32 0C
saturated. Determine
a. The volume of water that leaves the tower
b. The exit temperature of the water.

5. A cooling tower has an efficiency of 65%, water enters the tower at 55 oC. The wet
bulb temp. of the surrounding air is 29oC. What is the temperature of water leaving
the tower?

6. Water @ 550C is cooled in a cooling tower which has an efficiency of 65%. The
temperature of the surrounding air is 32oC dry bulb and 70% relative humidity. The
heat dissipated from the condenser is 2,300,000 KJ/hr. Find the capacity in liters per
second of the pump use in the cooling tower.

7. An atmospheric cooling tower is to provide cooling for the jacket water of a four
stroke, 800 KW Diesel generators. The cooling tower efficiency is 60% at a
temperature approach of 10oC. If the ambient air has a relative humidity of 70% and
dry bulb temperature of 32oC, determine the cooling water supplied to the diesel
engine in liters per hour. Generator Efficiency is 97% useful work is 30% and cooling
loss of 25%.

8. A 250,000 kg/hr. of water at 350C enters a cooling tower where it is to be cooled to

17.50C. The energy is to be exchanged with atmospheric air entering the units at 15 0C
and leaving the unit at 300C. The air enters at 30% relative humidity and leaves at
85% relative humidity. If all process are assumed to occur at atmospheric pressure,
determine the amount air required in kg/hr and the percentage of make-up water to
the total water flow rate.
