Unit 1: Why Do Organizations Change?

Topic

 After completing this unit, the students will be able to examine and analyze different
factors leading to organizational change. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to

 discuss the environmental pressures faced by business organizations which force them to
change;
 examine the role of trigger events in initiating the change effort; and
 describe and discuss the multi-dimensional nature of organizational change.

Unit 2: Players in the Change Process

Topic

 Planning and implementation are important aspects for bringing about organizational
change. This unit focusses on the people involved in the change process.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to

 explain the role of leaders and managers in planning for change;


 explain the need for transition structure and create a model of transition structure required
to implement change; and
 discuss the role of “change champion” and “steering committee” in bringing about
change in the organization.

Unit 3: Organizational Capacity for Change

Topic

 In this unit the students will learn about organizational capacity for change and the
factors that contribute to the organizations capability to embrace change.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to

 explain organizational capacity for change;


 discuss the role of resources, systems and procedures, and organizational culture in
success of change initiatives; and
 discuss the distinct dimensions which contribute to organizations capacity for change.

Unit 4: Envisioning Change

Topics

 The leaders need to motivate followers to question the status quo, initiate diagnosis of
what needs to change, and examine the requirements for effective implementation. This
unit examines what needs to change by creating a vision for change.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to

 apply the process of shared diagnosis;


 discuss why organizations should create a vision statement for guiding organizational
change; and
 create a motivating vision statement for building mutual engagement, discussing the
features of a compelling vision statement.

Unit 7: Communicating During the Change

Topic

 This unit examines the importance of continuous communication during the


implementation of change in organizations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to

 examine the importance of communication during implementation of change;


 explain how to identify stakeholders, create a communication plan for each, and outline
the role and responsibilities of people in the communication plan; and
 identify the right media which should be used to tailor communication for each
stakeholder.

Unit 8: Importance of Leadership in the Change Process

Topic

 This unit discusses how leaders reinforce new behaviours through structures, systems,
and technologies for implementing long lasting change.

Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to

 discuss the role of leaders in effective implementation of change in an organization


 classify the skills of an effective leader for initiating change; and
analyze the need to develop future change leaders in an organization
