“The Street Smart Manual is a handy guidebook for the children which contains practical subjects
such as health and hygiene and media literacy”
Rationale
According to the recent 2022 data gathered by the World Bank, it shows 90.9 percent of
Filipino children aged 10 appear to be in a situation of learning poverty, while 90.4 percent are
classified as suffering from learning deprivation. Additionally, 5 percent of Filipino children at that
age are still unschooled. A major issue that could be highlighted from this is that without immediate
intervention, this could result in the futures of those children to be at risk. In partnership with Unang
Hakbang Foundation, Inc. the proposed project “Street Smart” aims to provide the target
beneficiaries with relevant and practical lessons that may impart onto the children being that their
goals are to help and nurture the Filipino youth to be the best that they can be.
In addition, this manual aims to provide both in-and-out of school knowledge towards
children ranging from 6-12 years old with relevant and practical lessons that they can apply in their
daily lives. Considering that children’s minds have yet to mature, they mostly turn to either their
teachers, families, or adults in general to gain more knowledge and guidance on certain things that
they do not know much about. Street Smart is a guidebook that covers both academic and practical
topics that one should start learning from a young age. That being said, It is also one of the project's
goals to encourage them to learn more not just within the school, but also to be open to new
learnings and experiences outside the school.
Objectives
● For them to be able to impart the knowledge that they gained from the project.
● Establish the reader's understanding about health & hygiene and media literacy.
● Acquire skills necessary for tackling real-life problems and situations.
Target group
The Street Smart Manual project can directly benefit 5-15 years old children and the Unang
Hakbang Foundation Community in several ways:
1. Health and hygiene: The Street Smart Manual provides practical information on basic health
and hygiene practices such as proper hand washing, dental care, and personal hygiene. By
learning and implementing these practices, children can develop healthy habits and avoid
illnesses.
2. Media literacy: In today's digital age, media literacy is an essential skill for children to
develop. The Street Smart Manual can help children learn how to navigate the media
landscape, identify reliable sources of information, and protect themselves from online risks
such as cyberbullying and identity theft.
For the Unang Hakbang Foundation Community, The Street Smart Manual can benefit the
Unang Hakbang Foundation Community by providing them with practical information and tools to
improve their quality of life. The manual can also help foster a sense of community by providing a
shared resource for learning and problem-solving.
Overall, the Street Smart Manual project can have a positive impact on the health,
education, and well-being of 6-12 years old children and the Unang Hakbang Foundation Community
by providing them with practical information and tools to improve their daily lives.
Output/s
The output for the project will be in the form of a guidebook that aims to teach children
from a young age on how to handle and prepare themselves for real-life situations. The guidebook
contains relevant and practical topics that the readers can use and apply in their daily lives. The
topics will revolve around essential health and hygiene maintenance, and Media literacy wherein the
reader can learn how to take good care of themselves and learn how to navigate and be safe in the
media landscape. (Please add more, Child friendly design and warm toned layout for the guidebook)
Risks
● The amount of time required to produce a high-quality output. As students who have major
responsibilities, the project can be made out of effort and quality if we develop a strong
management of our time wisely by setting specific goals and specific time frames.
● Lack of Resources. To produce a guidebook that can reach the target audience, an actual
copy of the guidebook is a must. The group will be planning to distribute copies of the
guidebook in a digital and physical manner.
● Formal and deep vocabulary. Given that the target audience of this project will be the youth
around the age of 5-15 years old, creating a manual guidebook that can be easily understood
and visualized is a huge factor for the project’s effectiveness. To address this, the group will
employ visually-appealing illustrations and simple yet clear terms on the guidebook which
the youth is very familiar with.
