The Ethical Dimension of Human Existence

Intended Learning Outcome


Within the chapter, the pre-service teacher (PST) must have:
1. identify the ethical aspect of human life and the scope of ethical thinking;
2. define and explain the terms that are relevant to ethical thinking; and
3. evaluate the difficulties that are involved in maintaining certain commonly-held notions
on ethics

Time Element: Week 1-3


Direction: Provide answers for each item. DO NOT delete any element on this worksheet.
Answer the questions right after each item or provide another page where your answers can be
found. Upon submission, include the worksheet with answers in the same document. Only one
document in .doc file type shall be submitted; do not make it into a PDF or JPEG file type.

Engagement
1. Make a list of the following:
a. three obligations we are expected to fulfill, (3 pts)
As a student, I need to do my assignments and follow the rules of the school.
As a son and eldest brother, I need to protect my younger siblings and my family.
As a human being is obliged to survive and to live a meaningful role.
b. three prohibitions we are required to respect, (3 pts)
As a man in our community, I am required to respect other people.
As an individual, I am required to respect the Laws.
As a person, I am required to respect cultures and races.
c. three ideals we are encouraged to meet. (3 pts)
As a person, I am encouraged to exercise right values and good conduct at all times.
As a servant of God, ideally I am encouraged to be honest and righteous.
As a human, to keep peace I am encouraged to love for others and lend help for those who are in
need.

Identify each one of them whether these are ethical in nature or not. (6 pts.)

2. Come up with a list of five common Filipino values. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of each of
these values. (5 pts.)
Hospitality
Strength: Generosity aligned with manners and respect. One of the very known Filipino values.
Weakness: Birth for trust issues. Easily abused most of the time.

Hardworking Attitude
Strength: Persistent and focused attitude. Great determination to finish the job.
Weakness: Fatigue and prone to depression, stress and desperate measures to earn money.

Religiosity
Strength: Love for God molds characters and builds faith to push through trials.
Weakness: Strict uphold to tradition and practices. Prone for discrimination.

Family Oriented
Strength: Family serves as a motivation and push to pursue greater heights.
Weakness: Providence due to financial status and push to desperation.

Humour and Positivity


Strength: Source of the beautiful smiles. Keeps us going even at difficult times.
Weakness: Sensitive type of people cannot go along. May or may not hurt feelings for others.

3. Make a comment on this statement: “What I believe must be true if I feel very strongly about it.” (5
pts.)
The statement above is one sided. It may or may not be true to all people. Even our strong feelings can
fool us sometimes. Hence, our beliefs cannot strongly depend on our feelings, same thing that we
cannot depend on our feelings on what to believe. We really need to think logically because our feelings
can sometimes deceive us. We need to be wise enough before we can trully believe on different things
in the world.
