ACTIVITY #5
CLASSROOM AS A LABORATORY OF LIFE

“THIS IS A CHILD FRIENDLY CLASSHOME”, this is the usual signage posted

in every public-school classroom, since the Department of Education wants its

learner to feel that they are at home, that they can be themselves with no

pretentions. For teachers, classrooms can be their learners haven, where they

can tell their story, make new friends and find a shoulder to lean on.

Classroom for others is a four cornered room but for teachers it is a laboratory

for future President, Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Educators, Househelpers,

Garbage Collectors, Security Guards, Overseas Filipino Workers and among

others. This is the four cornered room which is filled with dreams and passion

to be great, to change the world and to lift the socio-economic status of their

community and eventually this country.

THEIR STORIES

Classroom environment is an important, most powerful and effective

instrument of socialization where learners from different socio-economic

backgrounds come together to learn (Adesua, 2014). There are learners who

came from a well-off family, who seeks for attention and love for they haven’t

felt that since the parents are busy with their profession and businesses. For

these types of learners everything is provided but what’s missing the love and

attention of their parents. Another type of learner is a learner who lacks in

financial support, they are willing to learn but they would opt to spend three
days or more in helping their parents to plant and harvest agricultural produce

than going to school and attend classes. This a sad reality if teachers are

assigned in mountainous areas, you can see a potential with these leaners, but

they cannot focus in developing that potential since their stomach is ragging. If

the government can only provide stable livelihood plan to these people there is

a huge possibility that one day, one of these children living beyond the poverty

lane will run the country.

THE REALITY

According to research conducted in 2016 by National Baseline on Violence

Against Children (NBS-VAC) revealed that 21.5% of respondents that is one in

five children has experienced sexual abuse. If classrooms are haven for

learners, the outside world is the opposite, the outside world is so cruel that a

10–18-year-old child may experience abuse from people who supposedly help

them reach their dreams. With this, teachers act as counselors to help the

child cope with trauma and live his/her life again.

THEIR DREAMS

Big or small teachers serves as bridge for these young individuals to reach their

dreams. Teachers are also great cheerleaders, cheering everyone that they can,

that Ma’am and Sir got their back whenever they fall. The classroom is a place

where they let their wings grow and whenever they are ready to fly people

inside it will cheer for them and support them to whatever endeavor awaits for

them.
To sum it up, classroom is a laboratory of life not just because it produces

individuals who will eventually rule the world, classroom is a laboratory of life

because you can hear different stories from different walks of life, their struggle

before they can reach success.
