What is 555 timer?
 555 Timer
A 555 timer is an integrated circuit which is used to generate accurate
time delays and oscillation.

Features
• It can be operated of different power supplies ranging from 4.5 Volts to 15 Volts.

• The name 555 comes from the fact that it contains three 5 Kilo-Ohm resistors in
series to form the voltage divider pattern.

• It can be used either as a pulse generator or an oscillator by operating it in

different modes.

• 555 timer can be operated in both astable and monostable modes.

• They reduce or supply 200mA of load current.

 Pin Diagram Pin Function
• GND pin is used to supply a zero voltage to
the IC.

• Trigger pin is used to convert the FF from set

to reset.

• Pin-3 is an output pin.

• Reset pin is used to reset the flip flop.

• Control voltage pin is used to control the

timing of 555 timer.

• The timing cycle is completed when voltage

• Voltage supply pin, is used to supply the

voltage to the IC
 Block Diagram How it works?
• Three 5KΩ resistors connected internally
producing a voltage divider network between
pin 8 and pin 1.

• The voltage across this series resistive network

holds the negative inverting input of
comparator two at 2/3 Vcc and the positive non-
inverting input to comparator one at 1/3 Vcc.

• The two comparators produce an output

voltage dependent upon the voltage difference
at their inputs .

• The outputs from both comparators are

connected to the two inputs of the flip-flop
which in turn produces either a “HIGH” or
“LOW” level output.

• The output from the flip-flop is used to control

a high current output switching stage to drive
