PHILIPPINE UNION COLLEGE

Angel Nikka B. Ugsang

In 1917, Seventh-day Adventist Church missionaries founded the Philippine Union

College, which is now called the Adventist University of the Philippines. It is a private Christian
coeducational higher education institution located in Puting Kahoy, Silang, Cavite, Philippines.
It is remarkable in the history of medical laboratory science as it became one of the very first
schools to offer a full 4 year course in medical technology when it absorbed the School of
Technology of the Manila Sanitarium and Hospital in 1954, making MSH its sister
establishment. After 2 years, the said school graduated its very first graduate, Dr. Jesse Umali.

Dr. Jesse Umali was also the first ever medical technologist in the Philippines to earn a
Bachelor's degree in the said program. He later graduated as a doctor of medicine at the Far
Eastern University (FEU) and became a successful OB-gynecologist in the US. Furthermore, he
is also the owner of Omega Lab, Vito Cruz, Manila.

At the summer 1955 graduation, two more graduated: Mr. Avelino Oliva and Miss
Adoracion Yutuc.
