OBJECTIVE 9
Designed, adapted and implemented teaching strategies that are responsive to learners with
disabilities, giftedness and talents

PROMPT #1
Context: Clara is often seen restless or unfocused in class. She also has troubles following
instructions and skips activities when left unsupervised.
Action Taken: You had a conference with her parents and found out from them that Clara was
diagnosed with a learning disability.

How will you modify the instructions for Clara to keep her focus on classroom activities? Write your
reflections in this form. Mention in your reflections a specific learning disability that you are
familiar with or have researched on.
Your Reflections
The action taken in the prompt states that a conference was held and it was
divulged by the parents of Clara that she has a learning disability. However, it was not
mentioned in the conference what learning disability Clara has. In this case, the first thing
that I will do is to clarify to her parents what is the specific learning disability that she has.
With this, I can determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the
situation of Clara. Moreover, the data that I will gather will serve as my basis in modifying
my teaching methods, styles, techniques, and approaches to meet the needs of Clara

without excluding her from her classmates.

A learning disability is a neurological condition that interferes with the brain's ability to
send, receive, and process information. People with learning disabilities may struggle
with reading, writing, spelling, and math.

The following are common learning disabilities.

 Dyslexia or reading disorder
 Dyscalculia or math disorder
 Dysgraphia or writing disorder
 Dyspraxia or problems with motor skills.
 Dysphasia/Aphasia or language disorder
 Auditory processing disorder
 Visual processing disorder
Reflecting on the learning disabilities above, it seems that Clara is not suffering from any
of the mentioned learning disabilities. The challenges that Clara experienced include
restless or unfocused in class, difficulty in following instructions, and skipping activities
when left unsupervised. Based on these challenges, it can be assumed that Clara has
Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD an older term for what is now known as the inattentive
type of ADHD or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADD is not a learning disability
but it plays a crucial role in making a learner with ADD difficult to learn. Specifically, it
makes the learner difficult to focus.

The following are the ways that I am going to implement to make Clara stay focused on
my classroom instruction and activities

1) I will place her in front of the classroom to prevent her from being distracted by other
students.
2) I will reduce unnecessary classroom decorations to prevent her from being distracted
from these visual stimuli.
3) I will use words that are suited to her level and her classmates.
4) I will present the lesson in smaller chunks to make sure that each part of the lesson is
understood well.
5) I will divide the learning tasks into smaller sub-skills. This means that I will divide my
learning tasks into small units. This will prevent her from being overwhelmed by the
complexity of the lesson and the tasks.
6) I will make her and her classmates active learners by giving activities that let them
share their thoughts and collaborate with others.
7) I will ask her and some of her classmates to update the class on their activity at a
given time interval. This will help her in focusing on her activity and prevent her from
shifting from doing other things.
8) I will schedule short breaks in my class to let my students regain their focus.
9) I will make her feel secured.
