Title: Introduction to Chemistry

Date: March 28, 2023

Instructor: Dr. John Smith

Topic: Atoms and Molecules

Key Concepts:

All matter is made up of atoms.

Atoms are the basic units of matter and cannot be broken down into smaller particles by chemical
means.

Atoms are made up of three types of particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.

The number of protons in an atom's nucleus determines its atomic number.

Molecules are formed when two or more atoms bond together chemically.

The chemical properties of a substance depend on the atoms it contains and how they are arranged.

Notes:

Atoms are the building blocks of matter.

Atoms are incredibly small, and it takes about 5 million atoms lined up in a row to make a line that is 1
centimeter long.

The electrons in an atom are found in orbitals or energy levels that surround the nucleus.

The electrons in the outermost energy level are involved in chemical reactions and are called valence
electrons.

When atoms combine to form molecules, they do so in a way that fills their outermost energy levels to
achieve greater stability.

The number of valence electrons determines the chemical properties of an element.

We will continue to explore atoms and molecules in future lectures.
