The passive
1 Find five more passive sentences in the text and
underline them.
The Simplon-Orient Express is, perhaps, the most
famous train in the world. It was a special luxury
train, which initially ran from Istanbul in Turkey to
Paris in France. It was called the Orient Express by
the European press. The train service was launched
on 4 October 1883 by the Compagnie Internationale
des Wagons-Lits. Passengers were greeted by their
stewards, who showed them to their luxurious
cabins. They felt as if they were staying in a grand
hotel. A lot of famous people have travelled on the
Simplon-Orient Express, including many royals.
Though some may have enjoyed it less than others
– King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, for example, was
seen locking himself in his bathroom for the whole
journey. Tsar Nicholas II of Russia even demanded
that special carriages be built for him to travel in.
The Simplon-Orient Express has also been
famously used by spies. It was an easy way for
them to travel from country to country and from East
to West.
