Unit 6- Strategies In Facilitating Student-Centered Teaching

MODULE OVERVIEW

Traditionally, in a "teacher-centered learning" environment, the instructor serves as the focal

point of the learning experience and is actively involved in the process of teaching, while the
students serve in a more passive or receptive capacity. In contrast, in a student-centered learning
environment, the interests of the students take center stage, and the teacher empowers students by
providing them with opportunities to choose and express themselves, as well as by identifying
ways to provide learning experiences that are focused on what students value. Students take a more
active role in their educational experience when they are in a student-centered classroom.
A student-centered approach to teaching transfers the emphasis away from the teacher and
toward the learner. It encourages students to take an active role in the learning process and
challenges them to be aware of their thinking patterns. Students are also expected to not just be
aware of their learning but also to take ownership of their development. Student motivation and
achievement, as well as overall happiness with the educational experience, are often higher when
students are involved in student-centered learning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Explain the use of Microsoft Word and Powerpoint in facilitating learning.

2. Identity Constructivists Strategies.
3. Identify Individual and Group Strategies.

LEARNING CONTENTS

1. USING MS WORD AND MS POWERPOINT TO FACILITATE LEARNING

Teachers and students can benefit from using Microsoft Word to develop new and
innovative methods of learning and teaching, and vice versa. MS WORD and MS POWERPOINT
is a critical application for educational purposes, especially in the classroom. In modern digital age,
it is possible to take notes without the use of notebooks. We can create notes that include diagrams,
graphs, tables, and intelligent art.
Microsoft Word is a graphical word processing tool that allows users to text using their
keyboards. A computer firm, Microsoft, is responsible for its development and production. The
objective of Microsoft Word is to allow users to type documents and save them on their computers.
It contains a number of useful capabilities for creating documents, just as other word processors
while through the facilitation of the structuring of a presentation in a professional manner,
Microsoft Power point provides motivation and assistance to employees. In order to ensure that
good presentation criteria, such as the number of lines of information per slide and appropriate font
sizes and types, are always followed, the default templates have been created. Using the styles of
the default templates can significantly improve the clarity and structuring of a presentation.
Overhead transparencies are less likely to contain excessive writing if this is avoided.

When viewed from the side, Microsoft Word functions as a blank sheet of paper or a test
paper for every student, which is very useful during a pandemic. Students are increasingly
attending online courses, which has become the new norm. The Microsoft Power point program is
used as a blackboard, and manila paper is used to make a presentation to the students. Enhancing
your presentation's interest level through the usage of multimedia can assist you in increasing the
attention span of your audience. Images, music, and video can all be used together in PowerPoint
to create a more visually appealing presentation. A presenter's ability to be more spontaneous and
engaging with an audience may be enhanced by using visual and aural cues.

2. CONSTRUCTIVIST STRATEGIES
The constructivist learning theory is used to guide the development of these strategies.
Based on the earlier framework of cognitivism, which believes that learning should build on
knowledge that a student already knows, this theoretical framework proposes that learning should
build on prior knowledge that a student already knows, known as a schema. According to
constructivists, learning is more successful when a student is actively involved in the building of
knowledge than passively receiving it.

Characteristics of Constructivist Teaching

One of the key goals of employing constructivist teaching is to help students understand how to
learn by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to take the initiative and plan
their own learning activities.
According to Audrey Gray, the characteristics of a constructivist classroom are as follows:
 the learners are actively involved
 the environment is democratic
 the activities are interactive and student-centered
 the teacher facilitates a process of learning in which students are encouraged to be
responsible and autonomous
Examples of constructivist activity:
Experimentation: students individually perform an experiment and then come together as a class
to discuss the results.

3. INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP STRATEGIES

The use of strategies when performing a task is critical to achieving the greatest possible
outcome. Furthermore, tactics are critical in guiding a person through a situation. In order for the
person to complete the task allocated to him or her in an efficient manner. A large number of
people develop strategies for providing individual and group guidance.

Group Guidance Strategies

Group guidance is a service provided by guidance specialists to help a group of people overcome
difficulties that they have in common.

 Lectures or Talks- The lectures or talks are quite important in the process of guiding a
person. When a group is in need of direction, the primary method of resolving a common
group problem is through lecture. Furthermore, in order to better grasp their difficulties, a
question and answer session should be held. This will further aid in the delivery of the
most beneficial and optimal answer to the group's problems. As a result, lecturing is a
logical method of guiding a group of people.

 Demonstrations and role- playing- are encouraged since "actions speak louder than

words." As a result, demonstrations and role-plays are among the most effective methods
of counseling a person. Furthermore, it is less time-consuming and more captivating than
the alternative. This technique improves the engagement and energy efficiency of group
guidance by making it more interactive and energy-efficient. Because it necessitates the
participation of multiple individuals, the work is shared among them.

 Orientation classes- An orientation class is required in order to assist a group through a

new situation. As a result, each participant in a group requires precise instructions in order
to complete a particular activity. This can be accomplished by putting together orientation
classes for the group. So that they can receive all of the necessary instructions and have all
of their questions answered prior to beginning the assignment.

Individual Guidance Strategies

Individual guidance is advice or a strategy that is tailored to a specific individual in order to help
him or her solve his or her difficulties. Furthermore, it is the encounter with a person that allows
one to discover his or her views, behaviors, and feelings.

Spheres of influence - This approach is used to determine a person's personal strengths and
limitations. A person's ability to excel in a certain sector is dependent on his or her understanding
of oneself. This strategy is used by guidance counselors to motivate and advise a specific
individual. Furthermore, individual guidance necessitates the right management of a person's
emotions and operates in accordance with this.
Immediacy- Informing a person about the existing condition encourages him to work more
efficiently toward the goal. Furthermore, it fosters a sense of confidence in him, which will aid
him in his efforts to achieve his goal.
Proxemics- is the approach of observing and analyzing the body language of a certain individual.
Because of this, the guidance counselor will be able to gain an understanding of the client's
emotional and mental well-being. Furthermore, it will assist him in pre-planning his reactions so
that the instruction can proceed as easily as possible.
Congruence- is concerned with the input provided by the counselor. The counselor's feedback
should be honest and forthright. As a result, it will aid in the advancement of the client's situation.
Furthermore, it will help him to better comprehend the current situation and identify potential
improvements.
Hierarchy of needs - Understanding a client's requirements is critical. In addition, the client's
needs include emotional, psychological, and physical safety requirements, among other things.
Furthermore, the need for self-esteem and self-actualization are crucial considerations. This will
be beneficial to the client's development. Furthermore, it can aid in the modification of counseling
if it is found to be in need of improvement.

LEARNING POINTS

Here are some things to remember:

· The main function of MS Word is to create text documents that can be saved electronically,
printed on paper.
· PowerPoint is a presentation program that allows you to create dynamic slide presentations.
These presentations can include animation, narration, images, videos, and much more.
· Audrey Gray is the who gives the characteristics of Constructivist strategies.
