So sánh kép (Double comparatives)

a. So sánh lũy tiến (càng ngày càng) (so sánh một mệnh đề)
Dạng so sánh lũy tiến được dùng để diễn đạt sự việc đang tăng dần hoặc giảm dần một cách
liên tục.
- ..er and ...er và more and more được dùng để diễn đạt sự tăng dần.

short adj/ adv + er + and + short adj/adv + er

more and more + long adj/ adv

Ex: Betty is younger and younger. (Betty càng ngày càng trẻ ra)
Her story was more and more attractive. (Câu chuyện của bà ta càng ngày càng hấp dẫn.)
We're going more and more slowly. (Chúng tôi đi càng lúc càng chạm.)
- Less and less được dùng để diễn đạt sự giảm dần.
Ex: He became less and less interested in politics. (Càng ngày anh ta càng ít quan tâm đến
chính trị,)
He played the piano less and less as he grew older. (Càng lớn nó càng ít chơi dương cầm.)
GHI CHÚ:
Những tính từ 2 vần tận cùng bằng. y, el, er, ow được coi như một vần, do đó khi so sánh, ta
chỉ cần thêm er vào sau những tính từ đó mà thôi
simple => simpler narrow => narrower
happy => happier clever => cleverer

b. So sánh đồng tiến (càng ... càng) (so sánh 2 mệnh đề)
- Dạng so sánh đồng tiến với the ... the ., được dùng để diễn đạt sự cùng thay đổi (tăng thêm
hoặc giảm bớt về số lượng hoặc mức độ) của sự việc.

Ex: The older I get, the happier I am. (Càng lớn tuổi tôi càng thấy hạnh phúc)
The more dangerous it is, the more I like it. (Việc càng nguy hiếm tôi càng thích)
- Dạng ngắn của cấu trúc này được dùng trong thành ngữ The more the merrier (càng đông
càng vui) và trong cấu trúc The + comparative + the better
Ex: What time shall we leave? - The sooner the better. (Mấy giờ chúng ta đi – Càng sớm càng
tốt.)
How do you like your coffee? - The stronger the better.(Anh thích cà phê như thế nào? – Càng
đậm càng tốt.)
