Our computer works with a number of additional devices that helps it function, it is called peripherals.
Peripherals are devices connected to a computer to provide communication (such as input and output) or
auxiliary functions (such as additional storage). In CSS it is important to know how these devices are
installed and configured.

Lesson 1: Installing and Configuring I/O Devices- Week 3

You should install all the peripherals after the Operating System installation
I/O devices are input and output devices that let you control your computer.
1. Keyboard and mouse
a. Read the manufacturer’s manual before installing keyboard and mouse.
b. Inspect if the keyboard/mouse has flat, rectangular shape (USB) or round,
colored (violet for keyboard and green for mouse) with 6 pins (PS/2)
c. Install the keyboard and mouse by connecting it to the proper back panel
port
d. Do not install or remove the keyboard while the computer is turned on.
2. Monitor
a. The monitor will require an AC power supply
b. Check the connection type that will connect the monitor to the
motherboard or graphics card.
c. Usually the ports for monitors are VGA (Video Graphics
Array), HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and
DVI (Digital Visual Interface) used for best quality display.
d. The display is ready once the display is plugged to its proper connector on the
video card or the motherboard. Most of the time, drivers are not required but it
should be installed to utilize a maximum resolution.
3. Speakers/ headphones
a. Inspect the type of speakers and its connectors
b. Typically, 3.5 mm jack cable is connected to audio port of mother
board or sound card. Green single pinned audio port is used.
c. Plug in the speaker.
d. Headphones with microphone can also be installed by using the
correct port (Green for earphone and red for microphone) audio
port is also available on front panel.
4. Printers
a. Read the manufacturer’s manual before installing the printer
b. Connect the power cable of the printer to AC socket
c. Connect the printer cable to motherboard port (latest keyboards
are using USB while old version still uses parallel port)
d. Power on the printer
e. Place the cartridge or fill the ink tank with proper ink.
f. Start the Printer Install Wizard
g. Follow the instructions to properly install the printer driver
h. Print a test page to see if the printer is installed correctly.

Lesson 2: Device Drivers- Week 4

When you plug in a new video card to your computer, it may not work
properly. It is because your new device is unknown to your operating
system unless you install and configure it. Device driver or hardware
driver is a group of files that will enable your hardware to communicate
with operating system.

Recent operating systems uses generic drivers that allow hardware to work
at a basic level without needing drivers or software. However, if that
device has features unknown to the operating system, it will not work
without drivers. For example, you could plug any printer into a computer
and expect it to work. However, page size other than A4 is not available.

The following are examples of plug and play devices that are intended to work perfectly when first used
or connected, without reconfiguration or adjustment by the user.
1. Power Supply (PSU)
2. RAM
3. CPU
4. Disk drives
5. Heatsink/Fan
6. Speakers
7. USB keyboard/ mouse
8. Generic monitor
9. UPS
10. USB Web camera

The following are the devices you may need to

install after OS installation
1. Motherboard Chipset
2. Graphics card
3. Sound card
4. LAN/WiFi
5. Printer
6. Webcamera

Lesson 3: Installing Device Drivers -Week 4

The operating system may have a generic driver but it is not updated as the driver from the hardware
manufacturer. The following are ways to install device drivers for your newly installed components:

1. Manufacturer’s CD Installer – comes free upon purchasing a new peripheral or

device. (Laptop, video card, printer) This installation may require updates when
connected to the internet.
a. Install the new device/ peripheral hardware
b. Insert the CD installer into CD ROM
c. Start the Install Wizard
d. Follow the instructions to properly install the driver
e. You may be required to restart the PC after install
2. Download online- if you format your computer and you need to
install all the devices

a. Identify the brand, model name and model number of the

device. Example Epson L3110 Printer
b. Go to manufacturer’s legitimate website and look for the
latest driver, you will be asked to enter your Operating
system and version
c. Download and run the installer
d. Follow the instructions to properly install the driver
e. You may be required to restart the PC after install
