BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Configure your peripheral devices for software installation is an

important task to make the computer system perform better, this require
knowledge of the basic devices and ports for connecting these devices.
Some peripherals are performing normally after the operating system is
installed, but there are other devices that require driver software for its
installation in the system.

A. Configure Your Peripheral Devices
Configuration in a computer system is the process of arranging the functional units in the
system based on their nature, number and characteristics particularly on the choice of hardware,
software and documentation.
The peripheral devices are those that are connected to make the computer system
functional. These devices give commands to the computer as inputs and help the user to view
the results in its output units. Peripheral device is added to the computer for expansion of its
abilities.
- Input peripheral devices
Keyboard KVM (keyboard, video, mouse)
Mouse Microphone
Touch screen Biometric device
Scanner Game pad
Barcode reader Digitizer

- Output peripheral devices

Printer
Speaker
Monitor (screen)
Projector

3
Bus is a subsystem in the computer used to transfer the data between computer
components inside a computer or between a computer. The transfer of signal connection is
logically done in the connection of several peripherals on the same wire bus which are either
internal bus (connection to various internal devices) or external bus (connection to various
external devices).
- Internal slots for the following cards:
 PCI – Peripheral Component Interconnect (for sound cards, network cards and modems)
 PCIe – PCI Express (it succeeded the PCI slots)
 PCMCIA – Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (common for
laptop computers)
 AGP – Accelerated Graphics Port (high speed graphics port for video specially for 3D
computer graphics)

- External slot
 USB – Universal Serial Bus (standard interface device for many peripheral devices in
either plug-and-play or those devices that may need device driver installation)
- Types of cards
 Video card – also called graphics card is used for connection of output display unit
(monitor) of the computer, it has its own memory of 128MB to 2GB, usually have a 15pin
VGA (video graphics adapter) slot, others with DVI (digital visual interface) connector,
S-video (standard video), or composite video.
 Sound card – provides the input and output audio signal to the computer system.
 Network card – is the expansion card that allow the computer to connect to the network
and internet.

Recent design of computer motherboard contain different slots and have integrated on-
board connecting port at the front panel and back panel for external peripherals uses for mouse,
keyboard, monitor, sound, LAN and others. This make it easy to connect the devices and
additional card is optional for the normal functioning of the computer system.

B. The Softwares in Computer System
The System Software
The operating system is a system software installed in the computer to manage the
hardwares and softwares connected to the system. Operating system has its generic device
drivers in enabling basic peripheral devices in its operation for its input and output protocols.
Some peripherals may not be included in the installed devices and instead will need their own
driver for its installation.
Peripheral devices that uses their own device driver is programmed with its own machine
codes that rule and dictates information from the device to the computer. The structure include
speed and timing for the messages to be sent and received.

The Application Software

Application software is a functional program for end-users to perform word processing,
spreadsheet, presentation, database, web browsing, photo editing, media player, simulators
and game consoles.

The Device Driver Software

Peripheral device driver software is installed in the computer to make the device work in
the computer system. Load the CD/DVD intaller software to read the Setup information on the
CD/DVD, follow the on-screen instruction for the setup needed until the installation is completed,
reboot the computer once the installation is completed. The following peripherals connected to
the computer need device driver softwares:
Printer Biometric device
Scanner Game pad
Digital camera Digitizer
Microphone Barcode reader
Digitizer

ACTIVITIES
Direction: The contents were taken from the configuration on your peripheral devices, re-
arrange the letters to answer the specific word and write your answer on your note pad.
1. I P E R L A R E H P 6. D R A H W E R A
2. N O I T A C L I P P A 7. N I P R R E T

REMEMBER

Softwares are needed in the computer system to make it

functional, the system software serves as operating system for the
hardwares including peripheral devices; the application software is
installed for the end-users activities in word processing,
spreadsheet, presentations; and device driver software is installed
for the peripheral devices to function on its intended purpose. Photo’s credit to
