INSTALLING DEVICE DRIVERS
Device Drivers- More commonly known as a driver; a device driver or hardware driver is a
group of files that enable one or more hardware devices to communicate with the computer’s
operating system
How do I locate software or drivers for my computer?
a. Determine the hardware
Before searching for the drivers or software of a device, make sure you know the
manufacturer and model of the device. You can often find the drivers available for download
from the manufacturer’s web page or the drivers and utilities CD shipped with the computer.
For the listing of computer manufacturers, you can find it.
b. Download location
If the manufacturer of your hardware is still in business, often the drivers are
listed on their web page. If your hardware device manufacturer went out of business, or the
drivers you need are d-unavailable, many third-party companies specialize in out-of-date or
obsolete drivers.
What hardware device drivers should be updated?
Below is a listing of recommended hardware devices that you should make sure
are updated. Updating your computer’s drivers and other updates can resolve problems,
improve the performance, and increase the stability of your computer.

What order should I install my computer drivers in?

HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 1

After reinstalling Windows or your operating system, you may find that you have
to reinstall many if not all of the drivers for your computer components. Microsoft
Windows and all other operating system will not require you to install drivers in order.
As long as you are installing the correct drivers for your computer, you should have no
issues installing the drivers in any order.

What devices need drivers?

Hardware devices that are unknown by the operating system or that have features
that are known by the operating system all requires drivers. Below is a list of hardware
devices and peripherals that requires drivers.
1. Card reader. Also known as a media card reader, it is a hardware device for reading and
writing data on a memory card such as a multimedia card.
2. Controller. May refer to any of the following:
a. With gaming, a controller is a term used to describe the input device used to control a
computer game or simulation, common examples of controllers include mouse, keyboard,
and gamepad.
b. An expansion card of IC (integrated circuit) on the computer motherboard that
enables communication between the computer and another hardware device. Below
are examples of the types of controllers you may find in a computer.
a. AGP e. SATA
b. IDE disk or ATA/ ATAPI controller f. PCI Express
c. PCI g. USB
d. PCI Express
3. Modem. A hardware device that connects a computer or router to a broadband network.
Today, it is most often used to describe a broadband modem. But, it also describes what was
initially considered a modem to connect to the internet.
Example: cable modem, DSL modem
4. Motherboard chipset. A chipset may refer to any of the following:
a. A chipset is a set of electronic components on an integrated circuit that manages the
transfer of data between the CPU, RAM, storage, and Input/ Output (I/O) devices.

b. Chipset drivers. After reinstalling Microsoft Windows or another operating system, it

may be necessary to install your motherboard chipset drivers for all components to work
properly. These drivers are included on your motherboard driver CD or can also be
downloaded from the motherboard or computer manufacturer.
5. Network card (NIC). It is also referred to as an Ethernet card and network adapter. A
NIC is a computer expansion card for connecting to a network. It allows your computer to
connect to the internet using a cable (Cat 5) that is connected to a router
6. Printer. Is an external hardware output device that takes the electronic data stored on a
computer or other device and generates a hard copy.
7. Scanner. a scanner maybe used to convert a printed picture, drawing, or document into a
file which can be edited on a computer.
8. Sound card. Alternatively referred to as an audio output device, sound board, or audio
card.
9. Tape drive. A tape is a magnetically thin coated piece of plastic wrapped around wheels
capable of storing data. Tape is less expensive than other storage mediums, but also much
slower because it is sequential access and is often used for backing up large amounts of
data.
10. USB devices. Short for universal serial bus USB is a plug and play interface that allows
a computer to communicate with peripheral and other devices,
11. Video card. Alternatively known as a display adapter, graphics card, video adapter,
video board, or video controller is an expansion card that connects to a computer
motherboard. It is used to create a picture on a display; without a video card, you would
not be able to see this page.

HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 2

What devices may not need drivers?
Today’s operating systems have a lot generic drivers that allow hardware to work at a basic
level without needing drivers or software. But, if that device has features unknown to the
operating system, it will not work without drivers. For example, you could plug any
keyboard into a computer and expect it to work, but if that keyboard has any special keys or
features, they will not work not work until the drivers are.
CPU Joystick Heat sinks Thumb Drive Hard
drive
Disc drive Keyboard RAM UPS
Fan Mouse Speaker Monitor

How to Install Device Drivers

Here are the several ways on how to install device drivers:
1. Manufacturer’s DVD/ Installer
Normally provided upon buying your computer/ printer/ laptop

2. Drivers Pack Solution

Packaged of drivers where you can install drivers offline even without
an internet connection.

3. Device Manager (Update Driver Software)

To access: click on Start>Right Click Computer> Manage> Device Manager

4. Download on-line
Search the web, key in the Model Name & Number.

Procedure in Preparing DriverPack (All-in-One Driver)

a. Download DriverPack app at https://drp.su/en/foradmin

HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 3

b. You will see a “DriverPack-Offline.torrent” download file and then at the bottom
corner of the browser, click to install if download file is not visible, and press
CTRL+J to view download files.
Note: You need a torrent downloader such as, bitTorrent/ uTorrent in order to
download the torrent file. If you don’t have installed torrent app you can download
bitTorrent application at http://www.bittorrent.com/ after downloading the file, you
need to install this tiny app.
Visit http://www.wikihow.com/Install-the-BitTorrent-Client to proceed the
installation. Note: Using bitTorrent downloader is solely use in this procedure to
download free application. Downloading cracked/preactivated proprietary software is
strongly prohibited.
b. After clicking the file, the image shown will appear then click ok to download it.

c. The installation is started; wait for several hours to complete the installation.
What happens if a driver is not installed?
If the correct driver is not installed, the device may not function well. With some
devices, the device may work, but all of its features may not work.
Example:
A computer mouse usually works without drivers, but if it has more buttons than the
traditional mouse, those extra buttons will not work until the drivers are installed.
Can a driver make my computer do more?
Installing a driver only makes the hardware installed in the computer function
properly. If the correct driver is not installed, installing the latest driver for the hardware
can take full advantage of the device. But, you cannot install a driver for hardware not
installed in the computer and expect it to make your computer faster or more capable. In
other words, installing video card drivers for a video card that is not installed in the
computer does not give computer all the capabilities of that video card. You would need
the video card hardware and the video card drivers to be installed.
INSTALLING APPLICATION SOFTWARE
App is a very common term for an application, especially for simple applications that can
be cheaply and freely downloaded. There are also apps which design can be used by
mobile devices and even some TVs.

The Learning Aids Available With Many Software Applications

HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 5

Many software applications and Web sites provide learning aids. Online Help is
the electronic equivalent of a user manual. Usually integrated into an application software
package, online Help often is context-sensitive, meaning that the Help information is
related to the current task being attempted. Most online Help also provide links to Web
sites that have a FAQs page. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) supply answers to
common queries. Many books are available to help you learn to use the features of a
personal computer application package. A wizard is an automated assistant that helps
complete a task by asking and then performing actions based on the answers.
Popular types of application software can be categorized by their general use:
 Productivity software
 Graphics design/multimedia software
 Home/personal/educational software
 Communications software
An application can belong to more than one category. For example, an e-mail program can
be considered the both productivity software and communications software.
Different Ways of Preparing Installer Apps
There are several ways in preparing installer apps.
1. Direct downloading/ installation from web
Installation directly from web is too risky that contains malware or virus which also
requires ample time in installation mainly if you have poor internet connection.
2. Via USB storage devices (flash disk, external hard drives)
This installation is most recommended compares to other. It is more portable and
manageable due to portability of its execution.
3. Via installation disc
It is the traditional way of installation of application; it requires ODD in every
installation. Software is burned in an optical disc.
4. Via intranet or LAN network
This method requires LAN connection in conducting installation. Via intranet
installation, it is faster and efficient. It enables you to deploy multiple installations
during the process.

Overview of Anti-Virus
Anti-virus is program you install on your computer or mobile device to protect it
from getting infected by malware. The term “malware” is a catch-all phrase for any type of
malicious software, such as viruses, worms, Trojans, and Spyware. In fact, the term
malware comes from combining the words malicious and software. If your computer has
become infected by malware, a cyber-attacker can capture all of your keystrokes, steal your
documents or use your computer to attack others. Contrary to what some people believe,
any operating system, including Mac OS X and Linux, can be infected.

Types of Computer Viruses

1. Browser Hijacker
This works in way that takes over parts of the internet browser you are using and
redirect it to certain sites. Its purpose is to increase advertisement revenue by bringing
to certain web pages.
2. Directory Virus
It is also called File System Virus or Cluster virus. This virus works by changing the
path that indicates the files location by infecting the directory of your computer. These
infect the entire directory but are usually found in a location in the disk. These make it
difficult to locate your files and may seem that files have disappeared.
Example: Dir- 2 virus
3. Trojan
Trojan or Trojan horse is sent to your computer by a program that is hidden inside. A
Trojan disguises itself to make one believe it is an important or useful program. These
are often in highly desirable downloads like games, free software, and even movies or
music. Trojans are different than other viruses because they don’t multiply or spread.
But, they are very dangerous because they can capture your login information on site
where you input your information.
4. Memory Resident Virus
They are put on your computer memory. When the operating system runs, the virus
gets activated and every file that was opened gets infected. Even after execution of the
malicious code the virus stays hidden in the RAM. This virus corrupts programs and
files that are used in any way.
Example: Randex, Meve, MrKlunky
5. Overwrite Virus
This virus takes a file and infects it and the information in it is deleted, once that
happens the file is partially useless or totally. The file size is not changed even though
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 7
the content has been replaced. The file needs to be deleted, and you will lose the
content originally in it.
Anti-Virus Tips
1. Obtain anti-virus software only from known, trusted sources and vendors. It is a
common ploy of cyber atttackers to distribute fake anti-virus programs that are really
malware.
2. Make sure you have the latest version of your anti-virus software installed, that your
annual subscription is paid for and active and that your anti-virus is configured to
update automatically. If your computer has been offline or powered off for a while,
your anti-virus software will need to update itself when you turn it back on or
reconnect it to the internet. Do not postpone these updates.
3. Make sure your anti-virus automatically scans portable media such as USB sticks, and
ensure real-time protection is on.
4. Pay attention to the on-screen warnings and alerts generated by your anti-virus
software. Most alerts include the option of getting more information or a
recommendation about what to do next. If you get an alert on a work-supplied
computer, be sure to contact the help desk or your supervisor immediately.
5. Do not disable or uninstall your anti-virus software because you feel it that slowing
down your computer, blocking a websites or preventing you from installing an app or
program. Disabling your anti-virus will expose you to unnecessary risk and could result
in a serious security incident. If problems persist on a work computer, contact your
help desk. if the problems persists on your personal computer, try contacting the anti-
virus vendor, visiting their website for more information or replacing your anti-virus.
6. Do not install multiple anti-virus programs on your computer at the same time. Doing
so will most likely cause the programs to conflict with each other and may actually
reduce security of your computer.
7. Learn to recognize the warnings that your anti-virus software produces. Cyber attackers
can set up malicious websites that post very realistic but fake anti-virus on these
websites can actually harm your computer.
