I. INTRODUCTION:
You are already familiar with the different parts of the computer; you can now set up your
personal computer. To assemble and disassemble a computer is important to learn and
expertize in order to success in entering the computer systems servicing world. This is the
basic set up in building a computer.

II. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this module, i can be able to:
a. familiarized what is inside the personal computer.
b. comply with the requirements in installing devices, systems, network devices and
peripherals
c. check the quality of the work started in accordance with traditional technique.

III. SUBJECT MATTER: Computer Disassemble and Assembly

IV. LESSON PROPER

A. MOTIVATION
Direction: Write your answer on the answer sheet.
Before doing computer disassembly and assembly, what should you do first?
Enumerate the steps.

B. DISCUSSION
INSTALLATION OF HARWARE AND OTHER PHERIPHERALS
PERSONAL COMPUTER DISSASSEMBLY
STEP 1: UNPLUGGING: The first step you do is to unplugged all the cables that is
plugged in to your computer. These includes the following cables: Power, USB, Firewire,
mouse, keyboard, Internet, Ethernet, Modem, AM/ FM Antenna, Cable TV, etc. It is
important to unplugged those for safety purposes.

Image 1. Unplugged all the cables

Now that the computer is fully unplugged, move your computer to clean working
place. preferably a carpet, because the screws and other small parts will roll around if on
the tile/ floor.

STEP 2: OPENING THE OUTER SHELL/ CASE: First, unscrew the four screw at
the back of the computer. On most of the computer, there will be large knob you need to

unscrew using hand or by screw driver at the back side of the computer. The left side has
small screws because on that side, you cannot access much on that side.

Image 2. Screw at the back of the computer chasis

Once the screws are removed, you can remove the side panel. On most computers, they
just slide off. Start with the left side panel (the side that once have the knobs), slide
towards the back of the computer. Now you can remove the left panel. Just like the other
one, just slide it towards the back of the computer.

NOTICE:
If you are working on a carpet, about every 5 minutes, touch something that is
grounded (sink, faucet/ pipe, wire coming from a ground part of a wall outlet). You
should do this to avoid shocking the motherboard or other parts.

STEP 3: REMOVING THE SYSTEM FAN: First, unplugged the fan from the
motherboard. You can find the plugged by following the wire from the fan. It should be
labeled “SYS_FAN1”. Next is, you have to unscrew the fan from the outside. You should
be able to lift now the fan out of the PC.

Image 3. removing the system fan

STEP 4: REMOVING THE CPU FAN: The CPU fan is located right on top of the
CPU heat sink, which is a large piece of metal with fins on the top. The CPU plugs into
the motherboard in an awkward place, which is hard to access. You just follow the wires
and you should easily find it. It is labeled “CPU FAN1”. To remove it from the heat sink,
remove the four screws securing it in place.

STEP 1: PREPARE WORKPLACE

1. TAKE INVENTORY: Before you start, take an inventory of your parts. Do not
begin assembling the computer if you have if it is incomplete. Start with the step-by-
step process if everything you need is ready.
2. MAKE SPACE, MAKE TIME: Building a computer needs a wide space- about a
dining room table worth. Make sure to have a plenty of working room and few hours
to proceed with least interruption. Work on a flat, stable table top surface, or bare
floor, where you have room to layout all of the items.

3. PROPER GROUNDING PROTECTION: Use an inexpensive antistatic wrist trap.

Make sure you are wearing the wrist trap correctly (it does no good if you do not
wear it). And you now you are ready tom proceed.

Image 10. proper wearing of anti-static wrist strap

4. HAVE THE DRIVERS READY: If you have another PC that is connected to the
internet, download the latest version of drivers from a manufacturer’s website for
each component you need. It is always best if you have a copy of the latest version
and copy them to a CD or flash drive for convenience.

STEP 2: PREPARE THE MOTHERBOARD:

1. Have an extra care when installing a motherboard. Carefully unpacked the board from
the anti-static bag and put it on top of the anti-static bag where it came from.
Remember, you always want to protect your components from any damage caused by
static electricity, so you have to wear you anti-static wrist strap.
2. Before installing the motherboard, be sure to inspect if it has damage or defect.
3. Next, you have the read the manual first so that you in order to be familiarize about
the layout and which socket is which. Manuals are easy to read and understand, it
includes the illustration and instructions. You can read also the instruction on how to,
install the heats ink and the processor. Do not proceed until finished studying the
manual.

STEP 3: INSTALL THE CPU

1. Use the unlocking socket mechanism to open the CPU which is usually a lever.
2. Carefully line up the pins and place the chips in its socket; it will fit only when
oriented proper way. An arrow or the missing pin on one corner of the chip will show
how to line things up.

Image 12. lever or lock of the CPU

STEP 4: INSTALL THE CPU HEAT SINK

1. Follow the manufacturer’s manual on how to install the heat sink and the fan to cool
the fan. Failure to install the heat sink fan will caused a damaged to the CPU by
overheating. You need to spread the thin layer of the thermal grease that came along
with the heat sink over the chip to ensure proper transfer of heat.
2. Attached the clip that holds the heat sink in place keeping in mind that it need a fair
amount of force. Follow the manual, this will show the proper way of installing.
3. Connect the power of the CPU fan into the proper connector on the motherboard.

STEP 5: INSTALL THE MEMORY (RAM MODULES)

To install the memory modules, you have to insert onto the socket properly and push
down firmly with care until the clips on both sides of the socket pop into place. If your
motherboard supports dual channel memory, you have to consult the manufacturer’s
manual in order to know which pairs of RAM socket you should use. The RAM and the
CPU is the most important parts of the computer, so have to select the best components
and have an extra care handling them.

STEP 6: PLACE THE MOTHERBOARD ON THE CASE

1. Some PC case has a removal motherboard tray. If yours does, remove the screw
holding it in place and pull it out of the case.

2. Note the pattern of the holes in your motherboard, and screw brass standoff into the
motherboard tray or into the PC case in the correct locations (Always refer to the
manula and follow their instructions).

Image 13. Screw brass Standoff of the motherboard

3. Check the layout of the sockets on the motherboard, and confirm that the ports on
your motherboard’s back panel match the holes on the case’s Input/ Output (I/ O)
shield that Is installed in your case. If necessary, remove the old I/O shield by taping
it firmly a few times with the butt-end of the screwdriver, and then replace it with the
shield that came with the new motherboard.
4. Install the motherboard into the case while carefully aligning the holes and used the
screw that accompanied the case to fasten the motherboard.

STEP 7: CONNECT THE POWERSUPPLY

Proper connection important in successful computer assembly, it is fortunate that the
manufacturer’s create a color-coded power cables and has a unique shape of connector to
make job easier.
1. First, is to plug the ATX power connector from your power supply into the matching
port on your motherboard.
2. Locate the smaller, square processor power connector and attached it to the
motherboard.
NOTE: Your connector is usually located near the processor. As always refer to the
manual for the exact locations.

STEP 9: INSTALL INTERNAL DRIVERS

Install now the your drives, it is an easy work but still needs an attention.
1. Make any necessary changes to jumpers on the drives before mounting them in the
case. A two-drive system hard drives, plus one parallel ATA optical drive. Many
cases have a removable drive rails or cages to house the drives.
2. Use the included screw to attach your drives to the rails or cage, slide them into the
case. For externally accessible drives such as a DVD recorder, you can save time by
installing one drive rail and sliding the drive in for a test fitting to make sure that its
front is flush with the case
3. When the drives are installed, connect power and data cables to each one. Parallel
ATA drives use wide, flat data cables that can be installed only in the correct way.
Floppy drives use a similar but smaller cable; SATA drives use a thin, 1cm-wide data
cable. SATA drives use a new type of power connector that many power supplies
don't come with. Fortunately, many motherboards ship with adapters for converting a
standard four-pin power connector to a SATA power connector
STEP 10: INSTALLS THE ADD-IN CARDS
1. For each add-in card, you must choose a free PCI slot.
2. Remove its backplane cover to allow access from the rear of the case.
3. Carefully position the card above the slot, and press down firmly to seat the card
4. Secure the card with a screw.

CONNECTING PERIPHERAL OF PERSONAL COMPUTER

When attaching hardware and peripherals of the computer, ensure that they are connected
to the correct locations or ports. For example, some mouse and keyboard cables use the
same type of PS/2 connector. So, you must know first the different ports that can be
found in the back panel of the computer.

ALWAYS REMEMBER:
1. Do not force if you attached cables.
2. After connecting all then it’s the time to connect the power cables.

STEPS IN CONNECTING PERIPHERALS OF A PC
