1 GENERAL
1.1 This standard refers to expanded slag aggregates for light concrete obtained by crushing and sorting the
expended slag, used in building, accordingly to the legal instructions in force. Expanded slag is obtained by cooling
blast-furnace slag in expandation vat, with powerful water jets.
1.2 Expanded slag is delivered in the following types of granularity, provided in table 1.
Table 1
Sort designation Size, in mm.
0-7 0...7
7 - 15 7...15
15 - 30 15...30
1.3 Depending on the bulk density in refined and dry state, expanded slag aggregates are classified in the
following classes provided in table 2.

under 600 under 600
600-900 600...900
900-1200 900...1200
1.4 The unity for S.I. force legal in R.S.Romania – the newton (N) – has been rounded off as 1 N = 0.1 kgf
1
The exact transformation is 1 N = kgf …

NOTE - For the equipment from the Hunedoara Integrated iron and steel works there are admitted 25 % granules smaller
than the inferior limit until December 31, 1971
3.1 Quality checking for the expanded slag aggregates is performed on batches.
3.2 It is considered a batch the quantity produced in a 24 hours period of time (max. 100 t) expanded slag with the
same composition and from the same sort.
3.3 The determination of bulk density in refined and dry state and compression strength is performed on samples
taken only from 7-15 sort batches.
3.4 For the other characteristics the verification is performed on all the sorts.
4 CHECKING METHODS
4.2 The other characteristics are checked according to the standards provided in table 3.
5.1 The delivery and storing of expanded slag aggregates is done in bulk, separated by sorts.
5.3 Each delivery is accompanied by a quality certificate which contains the results of all tests performed on
expanded slag.
