Chapter 11 – Mensuration
Exercise 11.1
= 2 ( 80m + b )
Now, It is given that perimeter of square and perimeter of rectangle are equal.
80m = 2 b
40m = b
Thus, the area of the square field is larger than the area of the rectangular field.
2. Mrs. Kaushik has a square plot with the measurement as shown in the
following figure. She wants to construct a house in the middle of the plot. A
garden is developed around the house. Find the total cost of developing a
garden around the house at the rate of Rs. 55 per m2 ?
Now, Area of the remaining portion = Area of the square plot – Area of the house
= 625m2 - 300m2
= 325m2
The cost of developing the garden around the house is Rs. 55 per m2 .
Therefore, total cost of developing the area 325m2 is Rs. (55 x 325) = Rs.17875 .
3. The shape of a garden is rectangular in the middle and semi circular at the
ends as shown in the diagram. Find the area and the perimeter of the garden
[Length of rectangle is 20 - (3.5 + 3.5)m ]?
= [20-7]m = 13m
Breadth = 7m
Now, we have to find circumference of both semi circles.
7
As, Diameter = 7m , so, Radius(r) = m = 3.5m
2
22
Circumference of one semi-circle = r = (3.5)m = 11m
7
= (13 + 13 + 22)m
= 48m
Area of the garden = Area of the rectangle + 2 Area of two semi-circular regions
1 2
= (Length Breadth) + 2 x r
2
= (91 + 38.5)m2
= 129.5m2
4. A flooring tile has the shape of a parallelogram whose base is 24cm and the
corresponding height is 10cm .How many such tiles are required to cover a
floor of area 1080m2 ? (If required you can split the tiles in whatever way you
want to fill up the corners).
Ans: Given that Base of a parallelogram is 24cm and Height of a parallelogram is
10cm .
= (24 x 10)cm2
= 240cm2 .
Therefore, Area of parallelogram = Area of one tile.
( 1m 100cm)
= 45000tiles.
Ans:
2.8
(a) Diameter( d ) = 2.8cm , so radius( r ) = cm = 1.4cm
2
= [2.8 + (0.2x22)]cm
= (2.8 + 4.4)cm
= 7.2cm
2.8
(b) Diameter( d ) = 2.8cm , so radius( r ) = cm = 1.4cm
2
22
= 5.8cm + (1.4cm)
7
= 5.8cm + 4.4cm
= 10.2cm .
= 4cm + 4.4cm
= 8.4cm .
Thus, the ant will have to take a longer round for the food piece (b) because its
perimeter is 10.2cm which is greatest among all.
Exercise 11.2

2
1
= [(1m+1.2m) x 0.8m]
2
1
= (1.76m2 ) = 0.88m2
2
2. The area of a trapezium is 34cm2 and the length of one of the parallel sides is
10cm and its height is 4cm . Find the length of the other parallel side.
Height = 4cm
1
34cm2 = [(10+a)x4]cm
2
14
cm = a cm
2
120m = AB + 105m
Therefore, AB = 15m
1
Area of the field ABCD = (AD + BC) x AB
2
1
= (88) x 15
2
= 660m2
Length of the perpendiculars h1 and h 2 from the opposite vertices to the diagonal
are
h1 = 8m and h 2 = 13m
1
Area of Quadrilateral = d h1 + h 2
2
1
= (24m) x (13m + 8cm)
2
1
= (24m)(21m)
2
= 252m2
1
= x 7.5cm x 12cm
2
= 45cm2

one of its diagonals is 8cm long, find the length of the other diagonal.
Ans: Let the length of other diagonal of Rhombus be ‘ x ’
A Rhombus is a special case of Parallelogram
So,
1
Area of Rhombus = (Product of its diagonals)
2
1
24cm2 = (8cm x x)
2
x = 6cm
= x 45 x 30 cm2
1
2
= 675cm2

length of the side along the river.
It is given that distance between two parallel sides = 100m and Area of Trapezium
= 10500m2
1
Area of Trapezium = (Sum of parallel sides) (Distance between the parallel sides)
2
2 x 10500

area Jyoti and Kavita divided it in two different ways. Find the area of this
park using both ways. Can you suggest some other way of finding its area?
1 15
= 2 x (15 + 30) m2
2 2
= 337.5m2
= x 15 x 15 + 225 m2
1
2
= (112.5 + 225)m2
= 337.5m2

Therefore,
IL = IB + BC + CL
28 IB 20 CL
28 20 = IB+ CL
8 = IB+ CL
IB = CL = 4cm
Hence, IB = BJ = CK = CL = DM = DN = AO = AP = 4cm

requires the lesser amount of material to make?
Ans: From the given figure; Length( l ), Breadth( b ) and Height( h ) of the Cuboid is
60cm , 40cm , 50cm respectively.
= [2{(60)(40)+(40)(50)+(50)(60)}]cm2
= [2(2400+2000+3000)]cm2
= (2 x 7400)cm2
= 14800cm2
= 2[(80)(48)+(48)(24)+(24)(80)]
