Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The organization I picked is called Markham Contracting which is a construction

company in Phoenix Arizona. This company specialized in excavation and land management.
They are responsible for making pads and foundations for buildings and they also deal with
water management. This is an important part of the construction phase and it is what initiates all
other construction to begin. They are one of the biggest excavating companies in the state with a
great reputation and countless successful projects. My role in the organization is the project
manager of the excavation process of the new TSMC plant out in Anthem Arizona. My role is to
oversee and supervise the building of the pad for the new semiconductor plant being built. I
have to organize the contractors and the excavators in order to get the pad to its completion
before construction can begin.

2) Describe how the structure of the organization influenced the situation.

The structure of Markham Construction is one of a functional organization that

prioritizes work and cooperation. The structure of TSMC is a network organizational
structure. They have to maneuver around numerous other organizations in order to
accomplish and complete their work. They are adaptive and that is exactly what TSMC
wanted in the creation or their new semiconductor plant. They wanted an organization
that would be able to adapt to the changing and progressing situation. The creation of a
pad that is over two square miles is a difficult task and it also has different areas of
elevation making for an even more complex situation. This entire plant is set to be

 completed by 2024 so the more transparent and fluid an organization is, the more helpful
they will be to TSMC and the project.

Markham is one of the most reputable construction companies in the valley so

their work and reputation stands for itself. They were on the top of the list for this
situation and their record made them very desirable to TSMC and the rest of the
construction team. They are the best organization for the job and and the situation is
getting this project done in the time frame needed. This project all seemed from the
controversy over China’s possession of the island of Taiwan and its economy. China
views the island as their own and that made the people of Taiwan want to venture out of
the country with its corporations for the protection of their internal sovereignty. If
companies are able to stretch outside the borders of their own country, they are able to
hold more international sovereignty making their country companies independent. This
is exactly what TSMC is doing with their expansion out of Taiwan to The United States.

3) Recommend how you would use structure for an alternative course of action
regarding your case.

Markham’s structure is a functional structure which aids in the development of

projects. This helps in being able to shift from one aspect of the project to the next,
making a very fluid way of doing business. I would use structure to help in this situation
by making the construction process more efficient and thought out. I would use a
hierarchical structure which would help with the chain of command and execution of the
tasks needed for completion. The quicker we are able to finish our portion of the project,
the quicker other contractors can finish theirs allowing TSMC to venture out of Taiwan
and gain more sovereignty. This situation is direly important because every delay that
happens in the construction pushes TSMC’s venture further out making for less presence
outside of Taiwan.

A hierarchal system aids in the direct line of communication and action making
for a strong plan of attack and completion. It is important to have a chain of command
for projects like this in order to be done with efficiency and expertise. A cain of
command helps with experience levels and knowledge making for an informed and
understanding system. This course of action would depict exact courses of action to do in
order to complete the project and mitigate the situation at hand. The situation is
completing our portion of the project on time or early in order to expedite the
construction process of the TSMC plant in order to help them venture outside of Taiwan
and prevent from foreign interference by countries like china. The faster we are able to
work, the quicker TSMC and Taiwan can gain sovereignty.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

The structure I selected to use as a change was the hierarchal structure which
helps with chain of command and productivity. This frame is a good thing to use when
things need to be communicated through an organization with efficiency and it increases
accountability and understanding. When there are multiple levels of communication and
approval, there is more understanding of the situation and the state it is in. This is
beneficial for all persons in the organization. Markham would be able to operate with
efficiency and a clear understanding of the state of the situation and its progression.

This is such an important project and situation because it is able to help insure the
freedom and sovereignty of another nation that has close ties to The United States. The
quicker we are able to resolve the situation at hand, the faster the construction can go and
the quicker TSMC is able to expand and ensure its company’s and country’s freedom.
This also helps solidify tires with The US because they would have a joint interest in
Taiwan staying free from Chinese expansion.
