DO
Networking refers to connecting with the right people to advance one’s careers and skills. Think of it as
part of your professional journey. Networking is a two-way communication process. The goal is to build
relationships and allow people to help each other. We use networking for many things: to find a job, to get
some work experience, or to sell something.

Do remember that networking does not only happen in events. Any gathering may be a networking opportunity.
The use of social media (FB, Twitter, Instagram) can also help us grow our network of important professional
contacts.

Where do you/ your friends/ family members find information about jobs?

Here are five (5) easy ways to grow your network.

1.Create a professional profile on LinkedIn, Jobs180 and Jobstreet. Use job portals such as LinkedIn,
Jobs180, JobStreet to create your online resume/portfolio. Start connecting with persons/companies you are
interested in.

▪Facebook, Twitter – If you follow the companies or persons that you like, you may be able to find
jobs/opportunities.

▪LinkedIn, Jobs180, Jobstreet and other job portals – Let employers know that you are interesting, talented,
and can contribute. Share your passions, achievements, and work experience (if any).

2.Attend Job Fairs (online or face to face). Check the job fairs near you (Public Employer Service Office,
University’s virtual career fair or recruitment activity). Career fairs are an avenue to meet with your potential
employer and learn about job opportunities.

3.Attend public conferences or workshops. Learn new things each day. Stay informed. Connect with
people you don't usually talk to everyday.

4.Stay active in your community. Know what’s happening in your area. Reach out to others. See how you
can help. Build genuine connections.

5.Do cold calls. “Cold calling” is a strategy to reach out to a potential contact whom you do not know. This
can be done through social media. Most times, the person will not respond. But don’t feel discouraged. Try
another contact. Keep trying until you get a positive response.

NOTE: After this module, start building your network through Linkedin. Follow individuals or companies you
want to be connected with. By your second year, the expectation is that you have already created your
LinkedIn account in your Gen Ed subject (Personal Marketing Tools). If you don’t have one yet, please create
your Linkedin portfolio and start building your network.

As you reach out to the names that you just listed down, ask yourself these questions and answer them.

What will you ask them?

What will you share with them? What can you offer?

People Need to Trust You

Every network is built on trust. People may help you get into their network if they trust you. Without that trust,
you may struggle to get beyond the introduction. But for you to be trusted, you need to be trustworthy.

Build Trust By

● Being honest about why you are networking

● Being honest about your skills, abilities and qualifications
● Always being polite and professional
● Showing that you are interested in the other person
● Doing what you promised

ALERT!!! Be mindful of people you want to follow on social media. Do the necessary background checks on
them, if needed. Also, DO NOT give your personal details to strangers. Be wary of scammers.

● Be mindful of what you post on your page (and in other people’s pages).
● Do not overshare. Keep personal details private.
● Interact with empathy and respect.
● Check your tone.
● Always keep your pictures wholesome.
