1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification

This specification prescribes the general requirements for multiconductor 600 volt power
cables. Refer to 600 Volt Power Cable Datasheets for specific requirements.

B. Related Requirements

Refer to the Request for Quotation or Purchase Order for a listing of related documents
such as datasheets and cable descriptions.

1.2 References

The publications listed below form part of this specification. Each publication shall be the latest
revision and addendum in effect on the date this specification is issued for construction unless
noted otherwise. Except as modified by the requirements specified herein or the details of the
drawings, work included in this specification shall conform to the applicable provisions of these
publications.

A. ANSI (American National Standards Institute)

B. NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association)

C. ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)

D. ICEA (Insulated Cable Engineers Association)

E. IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers)

F. NEC (National Electric Code)

G. NESC (National Electric Safety Code)

H. NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)

I. UL (Underwriter’s Laboratories)

J. IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)

K. It shall be the supplier’s or Manufacturer’s responsibility to be, or to become,

knowledgeable of the requirements of these Standards and Codes. Any changes or
alterations to the equipment to make it meet Standards and Codes requirements shall be at
the expense of the supplier.

L. Whenever equipment, proposed by the supplier, cannot fully meet the requirements of this
specification, such exceptions must be clearly stated by the supplier. No exceptions shall
be allowed unless approved by Buyer in writing.

Cable shall consist of a multiconductor assembly as described on the datasheets.

2.2 Equipment

A. Conductors

Conductors shall be annealed uncoated copper with class B stranding and shall be sized as
indicated on the datasheets.

B. Insulation

Insulation shall be a solid dielectric as indicated on the datasheets. Insulation shall be

suitable for wet or dry locations. The insulation shall have a minimum rating of 90 degrees
C for dry locations, 75 degrees C for wet locations, and 250 degrees C short-circuit.

C. Metallic Sheath

If specified on the datasheet, a metallic sheath of interlocked aluminum or continuous

welded corrugated aluminum shall be applied over the assembly core of the cable.

D. Fillers

Fillers shall be used as necessary to give the completed cable a substantially circular cross-
section. Fillers shall be of an inert, flame retardant nonhygroscopic material.

F. Jacket

As specified on the datasheets, a jacket of moisture resistant flame retardant and sunlight
resistant material shall be applied over the entire cable assembly.

2.3 Inspection and Testing

Testing shall be performed per standards UL 1277 (Power & Control) and UL 83 (Lighting). In
addition, an entire cable assembly sample of all power and control cables shall be subject to a
flame test in accordance with IEEE 383, 70,000 BTU. Representative samples from all cable
types specified shall be used to perform this test (i.e. not on a production run frequency).

2.4 Identification and Tagging

A. Power Conductors

Single conductor cable shall have all black XHHW, VW1 insulation. 250K CM and larger
shall be TC rated. Multiconductor power cables shall have all black XHHW, VW1
insulation with printed numbers per ICEA paragraph K.3.A Method 4.

B. Control Conductors

Multiconductor control cables shall have base colored conductor XHHW, VW1 insulation
with tracers per ICEA Table K-2 Method 1.

C. Lighting Conductors

Single conductor cable shall have color coded THHN/THWN insulation per Indonesian
National Standard SNI225-1987.

D. Jacket

The following minimum information shall be printed on the surface of the jacket at regular
intervals:

 Conductor size in AWG or mm2 if metric cable.

 Number of conductors
 Voltage class
 Type of insulation
 Manufacturer’s name
 Marking to indicate UL listing

E. Reels

A bar coded label and a metal weatherproof tag shall be affixed to each side of the reel
indicating the following information:

 Purchase order number

 Reel number assigned by Purchaser
 Name of Manufacturer
 Voltage class
 Temperature rating
 Conductor Size in AWG or mm2 if metric cable
 Number of pairs in cable
 Length of cable on reel in meters
 Shipping address
 Shipping weight including reel, cable and lagging

The bar coded label shall conform to the Bar Code Standard, form number BC-ELEC-
REQ, attached to the Purchase Action Request - Quotation, by Procurement.

2.5 Preparation for Shipment

Reels shall be lagged or covered with suitable material and strapped to protect the cable from
damage during transit, outdoor storage, and handling. Each end of the cable shall be provided
with a watertight seal.
