When I think of a 'mad genius', no one is more deserving of the title than Nikola

Tesla. Born in Austrian-Hungary in 1856, this Serbian scientist was not just an engineer,

but an inventor and explorer of the many mysteries of the world. From his eccentric
(16)
personality to his distinct peculiarities, Tesla was one of a kind. The influence of his work is

extensive and is virtually everywhere in our hyper-connected modern life.

(17)
To begin with, Tesla possessed an objectively brilliant mind. He was blessed with

the gift of a photographic memory and he grew to be up a voracious reader. Working

(18)
entirely from memory, he would then proceed to build devices from scratch . If this was not
(19)
amazing enough, he was fluent in eight different languages. He was also an incredibly

industrious worker. He would sometimes be so utterly consumed by his work that he would
(20)
simply forget to eat or sleep for days on end.

All 106 bodies had been cleared , but signs of Saturday's party at Java's
Tanjung Lesung beach resort remained. It was at this spot that the pop band
Seventeen was playing their music to fans and revellers when Saturday's tsunami
smashed through . Now, crumpled metal stage supports intertwined with broken

chairs overlook the Sunda Strait, on the west coast of Indonesia's Banten 5
province, from where the tsunami emerged · to wash away the crowd. Drones
buzzed overhead the next day as a policeman quietly admitted that he would be
amazed if more survivors were found.
“There were men, women and babies," the resort director, Kunto Wijoyo, told
' . . ' .
the Guardian, recalling how he helped move the bodies littering the resort at first 10
light on Sunday. The Indonesian authorities· confirmed .that the death toll from the
disaster was over 429. The death toll, confirmed by the Indonesian government to
have been caused by land shifting on the nearby Anak Krakatau volcano, is likely
to rise further, with 154 people still reported missing in the accident zone and
more than 1,500 injured. With .the 1wa.ves destroying hundreds of houses, 16,082 15
people in tsunami-affected regions were confirmed as displaced. There were
lingering fears that more buildings were at risk of crumbling down or being hit by
new waves. ·

"I didn't see the waves. It was pitch dark. I just heard sounds. Stalls were
swept away, people were running, the water chased me. I just ran for my life. In 20
the morning, I came back and saw two bodies by the beach. They were bloated,
like they'd swallowed too much water, and their fish sacks were still attached to
their bodies. I'm scared to see the ocean now, even when it’s calm. I haven't got

the courage to go back to my house because it's by the beach.'' said Kusnadi,
who had sought refuge at one of the camps, together with thousands of others 25
who were displaced.
Elsewhere in the crowded camps, there was little observable anguish on
,
display, despite the Indonesian government admitting that warning systems for
volcano-triggered tsunamis are non-existent. Indonesia's tsunami-related buoy
warning system has not worked properly since 2012. 30
The thoughts of most locals, though, remained closer to home. Early next
morning, Lampung Omo, 50, picked through piles of splintered wood by the

6
roadside where her sister's food stall had stood until a few days ago. "This was
her only income," Omo said. "I can't stop thinking about her. I'm traumatised by
what happened." Wearing a plastic poncho, she gestured towards two grubby 35
metal spoons she'd picked up from the ground. "Now I'm just looking for stuff that
can still be used. They would come in handy."
_
Aula Arriani , one of the staff from the Red cross in Banten province, said that
authorities Issuing warnings on the imminent prospect of potentially dangerous
waves were causing difficulties in getting aid distributed widely. "We find that the 40
people are quite jittery," she said. At the slightest sound of thrashing waves, many
would start screaming. Panicked residents, many sobbing and clutching small
children, tried to .flee the village 'as false rumours spread that another tsunami
was about to strike. People clambered on to the back of vehicles or ran through
the traffic in a bid to reach safety while screaming, "Run up to the hills!" 45
Bahrudin, whose SUV had been swept into a flooded field by the tsunami, and
smashed through a two-metre wall, said that there was silver lining after the
disaster. He gave a whooping "Yes!" when asked if his car was insured. A shiny
flew motorcar would be on the way. He was far from smiling; however, as he
recalled the moment the wave hit him. It struck as he was walking along the coast 50
area with his friends on Saturday night, and he was knocked out by the force of
the wave. He added that despite having .numerous fresh red scars dotted all over

his body, he had been one of the lucky few in the area, simply to have survived
