Background of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected and will continue to affect the delivery of

knowledge and skills at all levels of education. Although many children and adult learners will

likely compensate for this interruption of traditional educational services and adapt to new

modalities, some will struggle. The widening of the gap for those whose families cannot absorb

the teaching and supervision of education required for in-home education because they lack the

time and skills necessary are not addressed currently. The gap for those already at a

disadvantage because of socioeconomic class, language, and special needs are most severely

affected by the COVID-19 pandemic school closures and will have the hardest time

compensating.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a cutting-edge automation and analytics system that

uses artificial intelligence, sensor, networking, electronic, cloud messaging, and other

components to create entire solutions for products or services. IoT systems have better

performance, control, and transparency. (Author, year) IoT applications have been

implemented in a wide range of industries, including digital networking, health, transportation,

and medicine. The benefits and needs of an IoT solution rely on the demands of the sector. IoT

applications are widely used in the field of health care, where they help in the collection of

statistical data and the further automation and management of medical procedures. (Sandro

Nizetic, et al. 2020)

The West Visayas State University Calinog Campus (WVSU-CC) practices the safety

protocols and implements them to approximately 1,500 students. These include social

distancing, wearing of facemask, good hygiene practices like frequent hand washing and

personal disinfection.

Temperature monitoring has become an everyday practice of the said institution, this is

to secure that all students are in good health and safe to be in the campus. The researchers

found out that the said institution has a limited number of thermal scanners for large number of

students. With this, the security guard has always had certain issues in monitoring the

temperature or WVSU-CC students. Also, when there is power interruption, temperature

monitoring is affected. The current system also has the inability to identify every student whose

temperature is being monitored. Every day, they have to write their name in log in sheets to

record their body temperature, thus, it becomes hassle to their part.

After a thorough investigation, researchers came up a sound decision to develop a

system entitled “Student’s Temperature Monitoring System” that aims to lessen the above-

mentioned problems. The system has the capacity to monitor students’ temperature in hassle-

free activity. Every student will be provided an RF ID; Bachelor of Science in Information

Technology (BSIT) students will be the proponents of the said system.

Technical Background

The various tools used in developing the Students Temperature Monitoring system is

NodeMCU related to the Arduino IDE programming language. These tools are used to develop a

user friendly system.

NodeMCU is an open source platform built on the ESP8266 that allows things to be

connected and data to be sent over Wi-Fi. Additionally, it may address many of the project's

requirements on its own by offering some of the most crucial microcontroller functionalities, like

GPIO, PWM, ADC, and others.

A microcontroller development board with wifi capabilities is called NodeMCU. An

ESP8266 microcontroller chip is used. A microcontroller called an ATMega328P is used by the

Arduino UNO. Along with the chip, it also includes components like a voltage regulator and a

crystal oscillator.

Development of a Portable Heart Monitoring System

According to Bugnai, N.T., et. Al. (2012), Coronary heart diseases are one of the most

common causes of fatality. The need for a precautionary device that is able to monitor a

person's critical vital signs arises. Portable Heart Monitoring System is able to arise to such

demands. The device monitors the wearer's critical vital signs such as electrocardiograph, heart

rate and body temperature. Physiological limits of normal heart rate and temperature values are

set into the device in order to recognize the normality of the vital signs being acquired. In the

event that values exceed the physiological limits set into the device, an alarm is automated to

sound to be able to alert the wearer as well as the people around him of the abnormal vital

signs being experienced. ECG cables are embedded into a vest worn by the wearer so that ECG

signals would have more stability with the ECG cables decreased mobility. Three electrodes in

contact with the wearer's torso are used to detect the electrocardiograph signals. The heart

rate is then taken from computation of the distance between R-peaks of the electrocardiograph

signals. The temperature is taken with the LM35 in contact with the wearer's armpits. A Z8

Encore Microcontroller processes the data and converts the signal to be fit for output on a LCD

touch screen incorporated into the device. The device's display shows the ECG signal, updated

every 3 seconds, the heart rate computed from the ECG signals and the real-time reading of the

body temperature of the wearer.

Temperature Monitoring for Air Conditioning Units that will assess the environmental factors like

temperature and humidity that will provide comfortable environment levels in terms of cooling

and optimized electricity consumption. This system will monitor and control the temperature of

a room. Once the system detects that the temperature reaches the given range, the system will

trigger and will send a notification pop-up message to the control panel and will display in a

monitor or LCD. With the use of Fuzzy logic the systems were able to determine its range of

limitation and calculation on where it will notify the status of the temperature and humidity. The

system will use Visual Basic.Net programming language as the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of

According to Sivasankar, G. et. al. (2022), the objective of the paper is to monitor the

temperature of students at the entrance and take the necessary steps quickly to overcome the

spread of COVID-19. The proposed system consists of a Contactless IR Infrared Temperature

Sensor Mlx90614, a NodeMcu, RFID Receiver, RFID Tags and a Buzzer. The Contactless IR

Infrared Mlx90614 Temperature Sensor helps in predicting the body temperature. If the

temperature range exceeds the normal limit, it stops allowing the person to enter the academic

premises. This is done by Machine Learning algorithms.

The Temperature is predicted by the ML algorithms and a notification is sent to the In

charge through IFTTT. This implementation helps to stop the spread of COVID-19 and acts as a

prevention measure. A unique RFID receiver placed near the entrance aids in the identification

of the corresponding student by scanning a unique RFID tag. The ID matches with the

database and predicts the contact details, which are sent to the in-charge via SMS. For

intelligence decision-making, machine learning is applied to analyze the temperature history for

corresponding students from the database, which helps to enable us to accurately detect the

affected range. The NodeMCU acts as the brain of the circuit, It controls and processes the data

collected from the RFID tag and the wireless temperature sensor. Also, it connects with the IoT

cloud using a Wi-Fi module. The buzzer is used to alert the student when the temperature

measured is higher than the threshold temperature level. The servo motor is used to control the

opening and closing of the door. Thus, the system helps to identify the high-temperature

person and stop allowing them into the college premises.

integration of an infrared thermometer and a capacitive humidity sensor, is able to provide a

fast and accurate tool for remotely sensing both ambient and body temperature in the

The proposed workflow for detection and tracking model is presented in Figure 2. First,

body temperatures of smart bracelet wearers are measured. Next, data collectors collect

wirelessly transmitted data from the smart bracelets. Finally, data are uploaded to a cloud

platform, on which abnormal temperatures and activity ranges are analyzed. This system only

uses data collected by the smart bracelets to avoid private data leakage associated with mobile

Requirements Gathering and Analysis Phase

Requirement gathering and analysis is the first phase of the waterfall model. In this

phase all possible requirements of the systems are analysis and gathered those tools and

devices that are required to develop a system. The documentation of the requirement is also

being the part of this phase.

Design Phase

In the first phase of waterfall model a team of requirement analyst experts studies the

various required tools and tricks to successfully develop the application software and prepared a

design. The system design phase helps in specifying hardware, system requirements and also

helps in defining overall system architecture of developing software project.

Implementation Phase

Once the design is complete, technical implementation starts. This might be the shortest

phase of the Waterfall process, because painstaking research and design have already been

done. In this phase, programmers code applications based on project requirements and

specifications, with some testing and implementation taking place as well. If significant changes

are required during this stage, this may mean going back to the design phase.

In this phase, the implementation phase is when programmers assimilate the

requirements and specifications from the previous phases and produce actual code.

Integration and Testing Phase

As per the name of this phase suggested collects all the developed unit functions in the

implementation phase and interconnected them to accomplish the full task together. This
West Visayas State University

Calinog, Iloilo
SCHOOL OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

process called integration. Before integration each unit is tested in testing phase and then after

integration the system and tested proper functionality of the system and check whether each

unit support integration process as well. Post integration the entire system is tested for any

faults and failures of the system.

In this phase, the user evaluates the product during this phase to check sure it complies

with the specifications outlined at the start of the waterfall project.

Deployment Phase

After completion of all functional and non-functional development and testing in

integration and testing phase the control transfer to the development of system phase of

waterfall model. In this phase the software product is developed in the customer environment

or released into the market.

Maintenance Phase

In the last phase the development companies provide the maintenance functionality to

the client who used that product in future if any issue occurred at their environment. To fix

those issues patches are released. This phase also focused on the product functionality

enhancement with the development of new versions of the product and released them.

Maintenance is done to deliver these changes in the customer environment.

All these phases of waterfall model are works as in cascaded format in which progress is

seen as flowing steadily downwards (like; a waterfall) through the phases.
