Generally, any queuing models may be completely specified in the following symbolic form

a / b/ c : d / e

a Type of distribution of inter – arrival time

b Type of distribution of inter – service time
c Number of servers
d Capacity of the system
e Queue discipline
M Arrival time follows Poisson distribution and
service time follows an exponential distribution.

SELF SERVICE MODEL

➢ The best queue happens when we can let the customer behave as the servers.

➢ This type of self service queuing system produces the minimum queue length and minimum
delay.
➢ The arrival distribution of customers follow poisson distribution and the distribution for
service time follows exponential distribution.
➢ In this model customer is the server.
➢ A typical example is taking the written part of a driver's license test.

➢ Self-service gas stations and 24-hour ATM banks do not fall under this model because the servers
in these cases are actually the gas pumps and the ATM machines.

M/M/∞ queueing model

Consider a section of a road subject to incidents. The space occupied by an individual vehicle on
the road segment represents one queueing “server”, which starts its service as soon as a vehicle
joins the link and carries the “service” (the act of traveling) until the end of the link is reached. A
two mile roadway section contains hundreds or thousands of such servers, thus an M/M/∞
queueing model is a reasonable approximation.

1. Self service system is followed in a super market at a metropolis. The customer arrivals occur
according to a Poisson distribution with mean 40 per hour. Service time per customer is
exponentially distributed with mean 6 minutes. Find the expected number of customers in the
system and what is the percentage of time that the facility is idle?

Model identification: It is self service model and the customer himself is treated as server.
The number of server is unlimited . Hence this problem comes under the model M/M/∞
queues.

Given Data:

Arrival rate = 40 per hr

Service rate = 1 /6per min

(i.e) μ= 60 /6= 10 / hr

i)The average (Expected) number of customer in the system Lѕ = ρ =λ /μ = 40/10

= 4 customers.

ii) P( the facility is idle) = Po = e^-λ/μ

= e ^-4

= 0.0183

= 0.0183x100

Percentage of idle facility =1.83%
