TOTAL
OBJECTIVES
1. To understand and determine the elastic, plastic and yielding behaviors of different materials when
subjected to torsional load.
2. To investigate and determine relationship between twisting angle and applied torque of the
specimens.
HYPOTHESIS STATEMENT
1. The higher amount of torque applied will result om higher angle of twist.
METHODOLOGY
1. Measure the diameter and the gauge length of the specimen.
2. Draw a straight line on the specimen.
3. The specimen is mounted between the loading device and the torque measuring unit. The shifting
specimen holder of the load is in the mid position is made sure.
4. Reset the torque measuring unit and angle of twist meter to zero.
5. For the first rotation, an increment of a quarter rotation is chosen. Keep rotating the wheel with a quarter
increment until 4 th rotation.
6. Continue rotating the wheel by 1 rotation until consistent reading of torque is acquired.
7. Then, rotate for 30 rotation and take the reading of the angle of twist.
8. Repeat step 7 until the specimen fracture.
Apparatus.
1. Vernier calliper.
2. Aluminium specimen.
3. Marker pen.
4. Torsion test machine.
EXPECTED RESULTS
Applied Torque (Nm) Angle of Twist (radian)
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the experiment succeeded in determining the relationship between applied torque and angle
of twist. The higher the applied torque, the higher the angle of twist. Moreover, the experiment succeeded in
determining the elastic, plastic and yielding behaviour of different materials when subjected to torsional load. These
criterias can be determined in the graph of applied torque against angle of twist.
