About properties

1 Describe the changes of state that occur to a substance at its:

a melting point: solid changes to liquid.

b freezing point: liquid changes to solid

.

c boiling point: liquid changes to a gas

2 Information about two elements X and Y is given in the tables below.

Element X Element Y
Appearance dull yellow solid Appearance shiny brown solid
Melting point (°C) 113 Melting point (°C) 1083
Boiling point (°C) 445 Boiling point (°C) 2567
Conduction of heat poor Conduction of heat good
Conduction of does not conduct Conduction of very good
electricity electricity

d Is element X a metal or a non-metal? Explain your answer.

Non-metal because its conduction of heat and electricity is very poor. Also, it’s a dull colour
and not shiny.
e Is element Y a metal or a non-metal? Explain your answer.

Elemet Y is a metal because it is shiny. Also, it has a good conduction of heat and
electricity.
f Which element is most likely to be flexible and bend without breaking?

I think elemt Y would bend without breaking.

g Which element would be most suitable for the bottoms of cooking pots? Explain your
choice.

Element Y because it has a very high melting point.

h Give the state, solid (s), liquid (l) or gas (g) of the elements X and Y at the temperatures
below.
i 100 °C ii 300 °C iii 500 °C iv 3000 °C
X = solid X = liquid X = gas X = gas

Y = solid Y = solid Y = solid Y = gas

About properties

I can...
● state what happens at a material’s melting, freezing and boiling points
● use information to predict the state of a substance at a given temperature
● identify metals and non-metals from their properties.
