ASSIGNMENT NO.4
B. Write a 100 word summary of everything you have learned and understood about the life of
Jose Rizal especially about his family and education as presented in the documentary.
I learned many new things about the life of Jose Rizal, especially about his family and
education. Dr. Jose P. Rizal is a genius of his kind who was molded by his parents and his
teachers. Endowed by God with versatile gifts, he truly ranked with the world’s geniuses
and became the greatest hero of a nation. I learned that although Jose Rizal was a hero and
a wise man who grew up in a rich family, he is still like us, a man who went through a lot of
hardships before he became successful and a real hero.

C. Answer the following questions:

1. What was the title of the first book Jose Rizal read? (5 points)
The first book was Noli Me Tángere (1887), which translates to "Touch Me Not" in Latin. The
novel tells the story of Don Crisóstomo Ibarra, a young man of Filipino and Spanish descent who
returns to the Philippines after a seven-year trip to Europe, and the book, written in Spanish, is a
sweeping and passionate unmasking of the brutality and corruption of Spanish rule in the
Philippines. Jose Rizal was inspired by "Uncle Tom’s Cabin" to write about the inequities in
Filipino society. With a Latin title ("Touch Me Not") that alludes to a passage in the Bible, the
work, published in 1887, explores the oppression of the local people by priests and the
government during the era of Spanish colonization.
