4. Section A

Section A

Learning Objective

Psychology 1A provides the opportunity for you to learn about various theories and concepts that explain human
behaviour. The purpose of this assignment is to assess your knowledge of the different psychological perspectives that
explain human behaviour. This assignment, challenges you to think critically about the use of marijuana and its effects on
states of consciousness and how we think and process information. The assignment presents the opportunity to
demonstrate your ability to work effectively in a group and conduct adequate research to put together a well constructed
argument.

Assignment Topic

CBD and Marijuana: Difference? Same? Can it improve insomnia, learning and memory?

Scope

The assignment focusses on weeks 1 – 4:

The science of psychology
The biological perspective
Consciousness
Learning and
Memory

Technical Aspects

The assignment should follow all recommendations in terms of the structure and format of academic writing. Marks will
be reduced significantly for non-adherence to the following aspects:
General academic structure – the Institution’s assignment cover page, title page, table of contents, introduction, body,
conclusion, reference list, appendices, marking rubrics, plagiarism report as well as numbered pages.
The total length of the assignment should be a minimum of 4 – 5 (not more than 6) typed pages. This excludes the
cover page, table of contents, reference list and appendices. Therefore each member’s individual contribution should
not be less than one typed page in length (excluding the introduction and conclusion).
Headings and subheadings must appear in the text exactly as they do in the table of contents. All headings must be
numbered.
The use of bullet points is strongly discouraged unless it can be academically justified.
Avoid the use of first-person language e.g. ‘I’
Take note of the mark allocation and criteria to ensure that you are offering sufficient information for the marks
allocated to each area of your assignment.

Marking Criteria

Ensure to consult the marking rubric in Section B for specific criteria. Marks will be awarded for the following:
Evidence of detailed research and evaluation of data from various reliable sources.
Preparation according to the scope guidelines and marking rubrics provided.
Skilled application of relevant knowledge and tools required to evaluate the assignment topic and provide explanations
as to why particular factors are relevant.
Originality – evidence of your own ideas and analysis.
Plagiarism is a very serious matter and if any part of your assignment is found to be plagiarised you risk serious
penalties.

4.1. Essay Question

Essay Question  100 Marks

Focus and discuss the following in your assignment.:

What are the similarities and differences between CBD and marijuana?
Do critical research in which you discuss the effects of marijuana and CBD on insomnia, learning and memory.

This is a group assignment where members will receive a unique mark. Hence, each group member will be required to
make a specific contribution to the theoretical discussion of the essay. Your essay should consider the following aspects:
Your essay should demonstrate consideration for a range of theories and/or phenomena that are presented in the
chapter. Each member has to apply a separate (although related) aspect of the chapter for the assignment.
Concrete details (e.g. of the event) should be provided in your analysis that can practically demonstrate, explain and
justify the use of the theoretical principles used.
It is essential that the assignment presents as one coherent discussion rather than 3 – 5 unrelated aspects that do not
speak to each other. The group should thus ensure that there is a logical progression of ideas within the group
members’ contributions, which should build on each other
In the final assignment, each member is to clearly label their particular contributions (in the headings of the essay)
towards the assignment so that individual marks can be awarded. Consequently, the assignment should follow a
structure that resembles the figure below:

1.    Introduction

This assignment will analyse event X according to psychology’s understanding of behaviour…

2.    Heading A (Student 1’s Name and Student Number)

In this section, event X will be analysed in terms of…

3.    Heading B (Student 2’s Name and Student Number)

In building on from A, event X will be analysed in terms of…

4.    Heading C (Student 3’s Name and Student Number)

In following A and B, one can argue that the events that unfolded in event X can be analysed in terms of …

5.    Conclusion

In conclusion…
