ACTIVITY 3
Different types of Sports, Games, and Plays

A. Differentiate Sports, Games, and Plays from each other.

Game - A game is a structured form of play, usually undertaken for entertainment or fun,
and sometimes used as an educational tool. Games are distinct from work, which is usually
carried out for remuneration, and from art, which is more often an expression of aesthetic or
ideological elements.

Sports- Sport is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or
organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while
providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators.

Play - Play is a range of intrinsically motivated activities done for recreational pleasure and
enjoyment. Play is commonly associated with children and juvenile-level activities, but play
occurs at any life stage, and among other higher-functioning animals as well, most notably
mammals and birds.

Difference

The main difference between games and sports and play is that games involve both mental
and physical activities while sports mainly involve physical activities.

A game is an activity involving skill, knowledge, or luck, in which you follow a set of rules
and try to win against an opponent. Sports, on the other hand, refer to an activity involving
physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against others.
Although these words are sometimes interchangeable, there is a distinct difference between
games and sports.

Play is physical activity in its purest form. Play is unstructured activity. Games are activities
with a minimal set of rules, equipment, and coaching. Games may be competitive or
cooperative and a scoreboard is optional.

c. plays.
Physical play
- Physical play can include dancing or ball games. This helps your child build their
muscles, bones and physical skills.
- You should encourage your child to move as much as possible.
Social play
- By playing with others, children learn how to take turns, cooperate and share. This also
helps them to develop their language skills.
- You can encourage social play by taking your child to playgrounds. Parent and toddler
groups can also help them meet other children.
Constructive play
- Constructive play is where children experiment with drawing, music and building things.
- This helps them to develop their movement skills and become less clumsy. Constructive
play also helps children to understand distance and size. An example of this could be if
objects are small or far away.
- Encourage your child to do arts and crafts and play with building blocks.
- Let your child work problems out for themselves during constructive play. This is
important. It is better than trying to show them the 'right way' to do something.
Fantasy play
- Using their imagination during play is good for your child’s communication skills. It is
good for them to create their own games.
- You can encourage your child to develop their imagination by giving them props. These
could be things such as a whisk and bowl if they are pretending to be a baker.
- Dress up costumes also encourage fantasy play.
Games with rules
- Games with rules can teach children about fairness.
- You can play simple games like 'Simon says' or 'Duck Duck Goose' with younger
children.
- Board games are also a good way of teaching children about rules, as well as being a fun
family activity.

C. What are the benefits of sports? Give the 10 health benefits of sports.

1. Many athletes do better academically

- Playing a sport requires a lot of time and energy. Some people may think this would
distract student-athletes from schoolwork. However, the opposite is true. Sports
require memorization, repetition, and learning — skillsets that are directly relevant
to class work. Also, the determination and goal-setting skills a sport requires can be
transferred to the classroom.
2. Sports teach teamwork and problem-solving skills
- Fighting for a common goal with a group of players and coaches teaches you how to
build teamwork and effectively communicate to solve problems. This experience is
helpful when encountering problems at work or at home.
3. Physical health benefits of sports
- Clearly, sports can help you reach your fitness goals and maintain a healthy weight.
However, they also encourage healthy decision-making such as not smoking and not
drinking. Sports also have hidden health benefits such as lowering the chance of
osteoporosis or breast cancer later in life.
4. Sports boost self-esteem
- Watching your hard work pay off and achieving your goals develops self-confidence.
Achieving a sport or fitness goal encourages you to achieve other goals you set. This
is a rewarding and exciting learning process.
5. Reduce pressure and stress with sports
- Exercising is a natural way to loosen up and let go of stress. You can also make new
friends who can be there for you as a support system. When you feel under pressure
or stressed, call up a teammate, head to the gym to talk, and play it out.
6. Improved Lung Function
- Regular sport causes more oxygen to be drawn into the body with carbon monoxide
and waste gases expelled. This increases lung capacity during sports, improving lung
function and efficiency.
7. Sport Builds Leaders
- All sports teams need leaders to show the way and help develop new or younger
team members. An emergency study has found a correlation between playing sports
and strong leadership qualities. Sports enable people to develop a ‘team mindset’
whether it is winning, losing, or training together.
8. Improve Mental Health
- The Public Health Agency report that regular participation in sport and being active
can also promote good mental health. This includes improving your mood,
enhancing your sense of well-being, reducing anxiety, combating negative emotions,
and protecting against depression.
9. A Strong Heart
- Your heart is a muscle and needs frequent exercise to help it keep fit and healthy. A
healthy heart can pump blood efficiently around your body. Your heart will improve
in performance when it is regularly challenged with exercise. Stronger hearts can
improve the overall health of the body.
10. New Connections
- Sport brings together a mixture of people from different communities, backgrounds,
religions, and beliefs. Sports can offer a new way to meet others that you may not
interact with day to day. As a result, you can make new friends. And who knows,
playing a sport might even open new career and business opportunities for you.
D. What is the importance of Sports in Society?
Sports activities have always been important to societies all across the world. Physically
demanding competitions are more well-liked now than ever before. Sports will continue to be
important in society for the foreseeable future as interest in health and longevity continues to
grow and as governments and businesses continue to view sporting events as wise investments.
Even those who do not enjoy participating in or watching sports can still recognize important
players and may still feel a sense of national pride when their country wins an Olympic medal.
Whatever your level of participation, sports typically give everyone in a society a shared
narrative and a common objective.
