The participants’ assessment on computational thinking problems in modular distance

learning is important for this study. The following labels or initial codes, which were shown in

Table 5, were created by reference to Adu's step in assigning the initial codes to the relevant

extracts of the participants' responses to the interview questions about their computational

thinking problems in modular distance learning modality:

 Logically organizing and analyzing data

 Complexity of words

 Difficulty in understanding lessons

 Identifying possible solutions

The participants revealed the problems that they encountered regarding computational

thinking in the new mode of learning. Computational thinking requires the ability to objectively

organize and analyze data to prove a concept with quotations of strong and detailed textual

evidence. Most of the participants said that they are having difficulties in “Logically organizing

and analyzing” which is the first label/initial code. As said by the participants, “analyzing data

in our research and it requires lot of time and dedication”, “tasks where we need to create an

essay, poem, paragraph and stories and need to read a certain articles or books online.”, and

“…students nowadays had a hard time answering logical problems” wherein it is a fact in this

mode of learning with all the technologies to make things easier, the learners sometimes depend

on the help of modern tech.

Also, a participant shared that “Interpreting complex or technical terms are really

challenging.”, , which is labeled as “Complexity of words” and is the second label/initial code.

Another participant said that “Some of the modules seem incomprehensible…I am having a hard

time understanding them”, and this is labeled as “Difficulty in understanding lessons” which is

a fact due to lack of explanation from instructors. Last is the fourth label/initial code,

“Identifying possible solutions”, based on a participant “Give grades because I'm the leader

and understand others’ situations.”, where deciding is also a part of computational thinking

through implementing steps to solve a problem.

As a result, the researchers sorted out the initial codes and assigned a theme to the coded

or labeled answers shown in table 5.

The following theme was produced:

 Computational Thinking Problems in Modular Distance Learning Modality

An article of Barr et. Al (2011) stated that while the human imagination is by far the most

effective problem-solving mechanism we have, the potential to augment human thinking with

computers and other computational technologies has become an important part of our daily lives

and work. Many components of the collection of computational thinking skills are now taught to

students in several fields, but it is a must to ensure that all students' ability to master the full

range of skills, so their collective capacity is accessible to them.

Overall, the participants are experiencing lack of thinking logically and capability to

think of solutions for problems at hand. This suggests that their capacity to think logically and

their whole computational thinking skills must be enhanced. The participants may master their

skills through a lot of given sample problems and practice to learn in different platforms online.
