Cell Structures Analogy or Rap

In this project you are given the choice of either creating an analogy that links the parts of a cell
and their function to a real-life system or creating a rap with lyrics that explain the parts of a
cell and their functions. This project will be completed individually and is due by the end of class
on March 29th.

Analogy
If you choose to do an analogy, you are expected to link the parts of a cell and their function to
the parts of a real-life system and their functions. Examples include a school, a city, a car, but
you can choose whatever system you would like. This is your chance to be creative in showing
your understanding of cells organelles. An example of an analogy between cell parts and the
parts of a school is shown below:
A cell is like a school. The walls and doors are like the cell’s membrane because this is
where students enter the school and where substances enter the cell. The office is like the
nucleus because the office directs the school’s activities much like how the nucleus controls the
cell’s activities. The school’s security system is like the cell’s lysosomes since both are used to get
rid of threats to the systems. The school hallways are like endoplasmic reticulum because they
both are used for transportation. Vacuoles are like lockers because they both store items.
Chloroplasts are like the cafeteria because the chloroplasts are where food is made.

The requirements for this project are that you

 State what a cell is like (your analogy)

 You liken at least 6 parts of the cell to 6 parts of your real-life system
 Provide a reason or justification for why the cell part is like the part of the system for
each cell part.
This project may be completed in written form, through a presentation, through a video or
audio recording, or any other way provided it is approved by the teacher.

Marked out of 12, 6 points for relating each cell part to a system part, and 6 point for explaining
how it is related.
Rap
If you choose to create a rap, you will demonstrate your understanding of cell parts and their
functions through your lyrics. This is a chance to be creative in showing your understanding of
cell functions. You may find it helpful to use websites such as rhymezone.com, rhymer.com, or
rhymefinder.net to help you find words that rhyme. An example of a rap that demonstrates
understanding of cell functions is provided below:
Yo, we’re here to talk about cells

Now let me tell you about some cells that have shells

Plant cells, surrounded by a cell wall

Giving the cell structure, don’t you recall?

Inside there is the cell membrane

Allowing stuff in and out, that’s an exchange

The nucleus controls the cell’s activities

Holding the DNA, it's got lots of responsibilities

Then there are the lysosomes

They're out here protecting their homes

The mitochondria produces energy

Yeah, you’ll wanna put that one to memory

The requirements for this project are that you:

 Write lyrics that state a cell part and explain its function for at least 6 cell parts.
Note you will not be marked based on the quality of your rap but rather on the completeness
and accuracy of your cell parts and explanations. There is no expectation of need for you to
perform your rap. This project can be completed as written lyrics, video or audio recording of
lyrics, or other form provided they are approved by the teacher.

Marked out of 12 points, 6 points one for each cell part stated, 6 points for each explanation of
the cell part’s function.
