 Surah Ikhlas clearly states that He is Ahad (the one and only) with no hint of plurality.
 He is not answerable to anyone. (No father, no spouse).
 He does not have son to inherit His kingdom (Ikhlas and Anaam).

2. Quran tells us that Allah is Absolute and Eternal

 Ayat-ul-Qursi tells us that He is not dependent on anyone.
 He is not sustained by anyone.
 He is free from death or any other such weakness.

3. He is Unique.
 Surrah Anaam tells us that no one can see Allah or understand Him.
 Ayat-ul-Kursi tells us that He does not sleep to take rest.He is above all weaknesses.
 Ikhlas openly declares that there is no one like Allah.
4. Quran says Allah has created everything and it is He who alone sustains all that He has created and He is the
Master of His creation.
 Surah Anaam tells us that He has created everything and He controls all of His creations through His Divine will.
 Ayat-ul-Kursi also declares that all the things which exist in this universe belong to Allah.

5. Allah loves his creation and guides them to the right path. It is told that He will Judge His creation on the basis
of the guidance Ha has provided.
 Surah Fatiha not only tells us that it is He who can guide us to the straight path but also tells that He is the Master of
the Day of Judgment.
 In this regard Surah Shura tells the believers that He is merciful and forgiving only to those who seek His forgiveness
after committing an evil act.
 Allah is the King.Ayat-ul-kursi talks about Allah's throne and sovereignty.
 Fussilat tells us that He is the God with unimaginable powers to create things out of nothing and to recreate things
when they are completely destroyed.

Q Choose two from the following passages and write in detail about the various ways in which the passages describe
God and how He is unique: 6.101–103, 42.4–5, 112, 41.37. [10]
Q Choose two of the passages mentioned in the question and talk about God’s uniqueness, showing how His
uniqueness represents itself in the particular surah.

Avoid general answers that could be relevant to any sura. Just stick to the surahs you have chosen.
Sura 6.101–103 (verses from Surah Anaam) talks about His uniqueness through
 His Oneness and His full knowledge of everything He has created.
 Humans cannot see Him or comprehend His beings.
 He sees everything that happens and is aware of everything that is done, whether it is said or thought (omniscient).
Sura 42.4–5 (verses from Shura)talks about God’s uniqueness through
 The immense power He has over the heavens and the earth.
 The revelation He sends is so great that its power almost tears the heavens apart.
 He is also unique in His forgiveness as He is ready to forgive.
Sura 112 (Ikhlas) describes God’s uniqueness in the most concise way.
 He is perfect in His attributes and action, therefore he is One and Only.
 He does not give birth nor die nor leave any inheritance, so He does not have a beginning or end.
 He cannot have anyone equal to Him so He does not have any partners or any offspring, as He cannot share His
uniqueness or authority with anyone.
Sura 41.37 (verses from Fussilat) describes God’s uniqueness through
 His ability power and control over everything He has created.
 He is unlike the things that He has created, so is unlike the sun and the moon because
 He does not change, rise or set.
 The things that He has created are there to show humans how to recognise and worship Him.
ALSO COMMENT ON HOW THE TWO CHOSEN SURAHS/ SELECTED VERSES COMPARE AND CONTRST HIS
UNIQUNESS

Q How might the teachings in Quran about Allah affect a Muslim’s life today? [4]
 Understanding God’s attributes helps them live a righteous life as they know that He is All Seeing, All Hearing and All
knowing. Realization of these attributes helps them avoid evil thoughts and actions in their worldly lives.
 After learning that Allah is their Judge and they have to appear before him to give an account of the way spend their
lives, the believers follow the good path and abstain from evil.
 They get to learn that Allah is their Lord with absolute powers. This makes them more dedicated in their worship.
 When they learn that He disposes all affairs, they remain patient, steadfast and hopeful in the face of difficulties
as they know He alone can help them in all problems and they tend to supplicate with greater confidence and faith.
 He is Merciful and Forgiving. Understanding this saves them from hopelessness. They know that they will be forgiven
for all their mistakes and diversions if they seek His forgiveness for the sins they have done.

Q In your opinion, why should Muslims try to understand God’s attributes? Give reason(s) for your answer. [4]
 Because Muslims are becoming detached from God and learning about God’s attributes allows them to have an
understanding of Him which increases their understanding of the world around them, or their faith, etc.
 Because God is beyond humankind’s knowledge/perception, understanding Him through what He says about Himself in
the Qur’an allows humans to know why God is important to them in their lives.
This makes them more dedicated in their acts of
worship.
They know that they will be forgiven
for all their mistakes and diversions if they seek His forgiveness for they intentional as well as unintentional sins they
have done.

Allah guides His creation for their mental and spiritual growth.
 Allah has given guidance to mankind for their spiritual and mental growth.
 Quran tells us that Allah installed the ability to differentiate between good and bad at the time of creating us.
 Allah sent Prophets from time to time to guide us in areas where our natural knowledge of good and bad failed to help
us.
 Allah taught man what he did not know through revelations. (taught man by the pen as mentioned in surah Alaq)

Allah is the God of His Creation that deserves to be worshipped.

 He is the God of mankind. (Surah Nas)
 Alone worthy of worship. (surah Fatiha)

The references can be used from the following points from verses included in our syllabus.

Sura Fatiha Talks about

 humankind being created to worship God and that can be done in many ways, prayer, following the sunnah, making dua,
etc.
 It emphasises that He is the creator and controller of all that is in the heavens and the earth, and that He will judge
over humankind.
 They in return should ask Him for help to remain guided. Asking for help is important which is why this is used as a
prayer.

Sura 96.1–5 (ALaq)

 This shows the link between humankind and God by emphasising the creation of humans, that He is their creator and no
one else.
 He then gave knowledge to humans, the tool for their learning. They in return should seek knowledge whenever they can
as well as teaching it.

Sura 99 (Surah Zilzal)

 This shows that the earth is created for humankind’s benefit and that they will be judged at the end of time according
to how they lived their lives on it.
 That could be related to how well they followed God and His Messenger (pbuh), how they fulfilled their obligations, or
how they looked after the earth which was created for their benefit.
 They have a responsibility for their actions, so although God provides for humans, they have to do good to show God
that they are grateful.

Sura 2.21–22 (verses from surah Baqarah)

 This passage shows that God provides sustenance for His creation. He gives so that they can have shelter, food and
drink. They should therefore look after their environment and protect the things that God has provided for them.
 God wants humans to acknowledge that He is the one who provides them with this, and not anyone else, and so they
should not seek to praise others for what they have been given by God.
NOTE:
The passages are about God and His relationship with His creation. Answers need to bring out specific elements from
the passages that are particular to that passage and not just general statements. Candidates need to show the two-way
relationship, not just what God gives to humans. A summary of the relationship would help gain higher marks. Highest
level answers will provide good essays which also compare themes with other passages.

Q ‘God gave humankind guidance and teachings.’ Why does the Qur’an lay emphasis on the need to gain knowledge?
[4]
 Having given guidance (through the Qur’an and sunnah, etc.), God wants knowledge to be used to learn about life and
to live lives in a good way.
 Without learning, humans would not know about their rights and responsibilities or about their potential as human
beings.
 In order to respond to what God wants or what is of benefit to themselves or others, they have to learn how to
respond.
 God is full of mercy and love, He is guiding people so they benefit in this life and in the next. The most beneficial
knowledge would be that which helps a person fulfill their rights towards God, fellow humans, and to develop
themselves.

Q As God’s “representative (khalifa) on Earth”, say how men and women can serve God, giving examples. [4]
 Muslims can serve God on earth by understanding and fulfilling their obligation to Him, primarily through praying and
fulfilling the five pillars, and by not disobeying His commands.
 They should be grateful to Him for what He has given them, food, shelter, clothing, and thank Him. This can be done
by praying, reciting Qur’an, being generous to others, helping those in need, e.g. by feeding the poor, giving gifts and
charity.
 They should also look after the provisions God has given them, whether it be the food and the environment it grows
in, the knowledge He gives for guidance or the people who are in a person’s life for their help and wellbeing, e.g. by not
wasting food or eating too much, by learning something and teaching others, by respecting teachers and colleagues.
 These are just some examples, candidates can use their own.

Q ‘The Qur’an teaches that humans should be responsible towards the environment.’ Give reasons to agree or
disagree with this statement. [4]
 Candidates can choose to agree or disagree but they have to give a reason for their choice.
 If they agree they could, for example, say that God has given humankind everything it needs for its survival and
comfort, and they should not abuse this privilege by being ungrateful or wasteful.
 If they disagree they could say, e.g., that everything has been provided by God and it is there to use for humans’
benefit therefore there is no sin in using it how they please, or that everything is known by God therefore humans do
not need to worry about how they act, as God can restore whatever is depleted.

Q Write about the experiences of two prophets you have studied in the Qur’an (not including the Prophet
Muhammad). [10]

Story of Prophet Ibrahim

 Long before the time of Muhammad (S) people worshiped idols in a country called Mesopotamia (now called Iraq),in the
city of Ur. There lived a man named Ibrahim. He did not believe in idols.
 Once Prophet Ibrahim also known as Khaliullah (friend of Allah) had a father named Azar, he worshipped idols. One day
he went to his father and asked “How can you pray to a piece of stone?” Then Azar got really angry and warned Ibrahim
not to ask those questions. Ibrahim felt sorry for his people.
 One day Ibrahim got an idea, one night people were celebrating a festival, but Ibrahim went to the temple where all he
idols were kept. He asked “How do you do?” There was no reply. Then he got a club or an axe and broke all of the idols
except for the biggest one, which he put the axe around his neck.
 After the festival people went to pray at the temple, they were furious when they saw what happened to the idols.
They asked Ibrahim, “Did you do this?” He replied, “Why don’t you ask the idols.” “But Ibrahim you know that the idols
that can’t speak or hear.” Ibrahim replied, “Then why do you worship something that doesn’t speak or hear?” people
became outrageous, so they prepared a fire for him. Allah favored Ibrahim because he did the right thing. So Ibrahim
was in the fire for 40 days but Allah made it feel like he was surrounded by flowers.
 When Ibrahim was a lot older and a prophet of Allah, he had a dream that Allah is telling him to travel and preach. So
Ibrahim went to Canaan. He brought his wife Sarah and his nephew Prophet Lut. In Canaan hetaught about Allah, and
then he moved to Egypt. It was there he married his second wife Hagar. Sarah was happy, she wanted a baby in the
family but she was too old. Hagar and Ibrahim had a son named Ismail.
 Ibrahim took them back to Mecca, but Ibrahim had to leave to Canaan, Mecca with her boy, Ismail. Not long after the
water had ran out. Hagar went looking for water, she ran from the hills of Safa and Marwah 7 times. Then a burst of
water came out where Ismail was playing. This water came from a well named Zamzam, it‘s holy water and still here
today. again. Hajar knew that he had to go so she stayed in
 One day angels (disguised as men) came to Prophet Ibrahim. They told him that Sarah will have a son that will be a
prophet named Iss’haq. Prophet Ibrahim went back to Mecca.
 One night in Ibrahim’s dream Allah told him to sacrifice his son Ismail. He told Ismail and he agreed to be sacrificed.
They went to Mina and he laid down Ismail to kill him. Then as soon as he was about to kill him he replaced Ismail with a
goat, and Ibrahim killed the goat. This is the story why we have Eid-ul-Adha.
 Later Ibrahim and his son built the Kaaba, and by the Kaaba today are Ibrahim’s foot prints. He died at age 120 from
old age.

Story of Prophet Isa (Jesus) (a)

 The Banu Israil were given many favours by Almighty Allah but they were very ungrateful. They violated Allah’s orders, ridiculed the
prophets and even killed some of them. They started to worship idols and made a mockery of Allah’s message.
 Allah, the Merciful, again sent a prophet to bring them to the right path. This prophet was ‘Isa, son of Maryam. Allah bestowed on h
 Injil (Gospel) and ‘Isa confirmed what was in the Tawrah.
 Prophet ‘Isa had a miraculous birth. He was born of the virgin Maryam without a father, by Allah’s command .
 ‘Isa, born of virgin Maryam, could talk even as a baby. He was made a prophet when he was 30, and he did his duty as a prophet for t
 Allah endowed him with some miraculous powers. He could make birds out of clay, heal leprosy within minutes, restore the eyes of th
and also make the dead come alive. He could do all these miracles by the mercy of Allah.
 The Quran mentions the miraculous powers and the birth of ‘Isa in Sarah Al-Imran
 He asked the people to obey Allah alone but some of his followers made fantasies about him and they considered him a part of Allah
even a son of Allah.
 Muslims believe in Isa as a prophet and a servant of Allah.
 They do not believe that he is the son of Allah. Allah does not have a son or daughter.
 According to the Qur’an, Prophet ‘Isa was not crucified; rather, he was taken up by Allah, the Almighty.

Q God’s Messengers experienced trials. How can their responses help Muslims face difficulties in their own lives?[4]
 God sends trials to everyone, including prophets who are closest to Him. So Muslims should learn that trials and
tribulations are part of life and they may not be treated as a punishment given by Allah.
 They should rather be considered as a test of their faith in Allah.
 Hardships do not mean that they are far from God. They are just being tested.
 Being tested means they have an opportunity to become closer to Him.
 Trials are also sent to teach people, so Muslims should try to reflect upon what God is trying to teach them.
 Muslims should remain steadfast in difficulty and should not turn away from Allah.
 They should show patience and have hope of something good coming from their hardship.

Q God sends humankind messengers from amongst their own communities. Explain why this is significant. [4]
 Prophets sent from amongst a community will be able to understand the needs and condition of the people which will
make it easier for him to teach the message to them in a way that suits them.
 If he is from the community the people are more likely to be able to relate to him as they can see that he is the
same as them and he is also able to practise and benefit from the teachings he is giving.
 If angels were sent as opposed to humans, then people may not have been able to see that they can practise the
message in their everyday lives, or they may have started to worship the angels instead.
 The Prophet from the same community preaches in the language of his own people.
 The people are able to witness the entire life of the person who teaches them as a prophet. This adds credibility
to his preaching as they people already know that he is a righteous person since birth and that his words cannot be
untrue.

Q Explain why God sends his revelations through messengers. [4]

 Man is always in need of guidance from Allah from time to time because the messages sent by Allah were forgotten
after a certain period. It is not befitting for Allah to speak to everyone of human beings. He chooses the best humans
of their times and appoints them as messengers.
 The revelations were sent through prophets who were given the job of showing practical demonstration of the
teachings contained in the revelations.
 A human being can be the best example for human beings. That is why prophets were chosen to communicate Allah’s
message to the people.
 The prophets used to provide explanation to the teachings briefly mentioned in revelation. With God’s permission,
they also taught a number of other things not mentioned in revelations.

Q What lessons can Muslims learn from the stories of prophets in the holy Quran?[4]
Stories of Lessons Learnt
Prophets
Hz Adam AS  We must turn to Allah if we commit any act of disobedience with feelings of guilt and with a
promise of not repeating the same.
Hz Isa AS  Allah is always watching over us and comes to our help in different ways.
Hz Ibrahim AS  Allah guides his people to certainty of faith by showing them a number His signs and saves
them from shirk if they have complete trust on Him an His guidance.
Hz Mohammad  Allah helps us against our enemies and never forsakes the people who are walking the right
pbuh path.

Q Discuss the most important features of the Qur'an teachings about the Messengers of God. [4]
 Prophets are individuals who were sent by Allah to various communities in order to serve as examples of ideal human
behavior and to spread Allah's message on Earth.
 The Quran states: "There is a Messenger for every community".
 Muslims believe that the first prophet was also the first human being, Adam, created by Allah.
 The final prophet in Islam is Muhammad ibn ʿAbdullāh whom Muslims believe to be the "Seal of the Prophets" (Khatam
an-Nabiyyin), to whom the Quran was revealed in a series of revelations (and written down by his companions).
 Every prophet preached the same core beliefs, the Oneness of God, worshipping of that one God, avoidance
of idolatry and sin, and the belief in the Day of Resurrection or the Day of Judgement and life after death.
 Names of some Messengers, or their qualities as mentioned Quran AND Extra details, e.g. the names of scriptures they
brought
 Their roles as warners and instructors from God to their communities
 They were all tested by Allah AND They had Allah’s protections.
 Many were given powers to perform miracles.
 Best people of their times who could serve as examples.
Q ‘Undergoing hardships brings a person closer to God.’ Agree or disagree with this statement, giving reasons for
your answer. [4]
Points to Agree
 All prophets were tested which allowed them to get closer to God, likewise humankind now can get closer to their Lord
through their hardships, as long as they reflect and understand that God is testing them.
 Also, by remaining patient and steadfast, and not leaving their worship, they will gain rewards and understanding.
Points to Disagree
 Not everyone goes through the same hardships.
 People are different so they may react differently to hardships so they may not necessarily know they are being
tested.

Q What is meant by the term ‘Seal of Prophets”?[4]

 Muhammad is the final prophet in Islam, known as the ‘Seal of the Prophets’. This means that Muslims regard
Muhammad as Allah’s final messenger.
 Muslims do not believe that Muhammad was in any way divine, and this is confirmed in the Qur’an, which
states: Muhammad is no more than a messenger (Surah 3:144).
 No further prophets will come after Muhammad, as he communicated Allah’s final message to humankind.
 Mohammad is believed to be a universal prophet. It means that he was sent as a prophet for the entire mankind not a
particular nation and that the message he brought is for all times to come.

Q Why do prophets go through difficulties in their lives? [4]

 God tests his prophets in different ways,
 They go through hardships to deal with the difficulties of their mission, especially as many will face opposition from
their communities.
 They also go through difficulties to strengthen their faith which will in turn help them to carry on their mission.
 Overcoming adversity and strengthening your faith helps you get closer to God, which is a lesson for all Muslims.
