My Sister’s Keeper : A Movie Analysis

My Sister’s Keeper is a movie directed by Nick Cassavetes and released in

2009. The movie revolves around the Fitzgerald family, who's facing a very
challenging dilemma. Kate, who is the eldest child in the family , has leukemia. At a
very young age she experienced a malfunction of her kidney as a complication of the
recent illness. She has a little sister who is the only match among her siblings. Anna
is the only donor who can help Kate live a longer life. Kate knows that Anna is willing
to donate for her. But she knows to herself that she's ready to go, because her
illness is at the end stage. Kate doesn't want to suffer her little sister Anna to give the
consequences as a kidney donor that she knows will break her even though she
pursues that operation. Their mother can't accept the situation of her eldest daughter
and is afraid of losing Kate. That is why Kate asked Anna to refuse the kidney
transplant and reasoned for her sake, Anna’s sake. By granting Kate’s wish and
keeping it a secret, Anna comes up with the idea of going to a lawyer to file for
medical emancipation and the rights to her own body.

The question and problem in the movie was did Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald did
the right thing by bringing Anna to the world to save Kate? Even when Anna was
little, she went needle after needle for Kate to live long. The movie shows that every
kid in this world has their own rights and that Anna has the right to do whatever she
wants. That is the reason why Anna filed a complaint against her parents. The
importance of anna’s personhood matters her which is true. Growing up knowing that
you are born to save your sister’s life feels like shes the reserve once to her sister.
Anna also includes that she also suffers complications during the donation
procedure. In the age of 11 Anna believe that she has the right to her body even
though shes a minor. Another problem in the movie is that their mother is a lawyer
who stopped practicing her profession due to Kate’s condition. The mother appeals
that Anna cannot pursue what she files because shes only minor and according to
her mother she changes what she wants every 5 minutes. That is why Anna is not
cannot be accountable for her decisions. That is why as their parent they are
accountable for the betterment decisions for their children.

If i were in Anna’s place, i dont think i can have that bravery to sue my parents
but still hate and get angry to them. I know they still made me with love, but why do
they made me just to give parts of my body component to my sister. I know that its
painful to every parents to see their children suffer, why do they still do it though.
Suffering from painful procedures without the urge to say no for the sake of others,
her sister. All she wants is to know her purpose in this world except from her sister’s
donor that will only know if she win the case medical emancipation and the rights to
her own body against her parents.
At the climax of the movie, it is hiring day. That's the part were the real reason
why she file medical emancipation and the rights to her own body against her
parents is because it is her sister Kate’s wish, to die. It not really Anna’s choice to not
to pursue with the kidney transplant for kate. It was Kate how doesn’t want Anna’s
kidney because she was ready to die. Her mother can’t accept kate’s situation and
let her go. Anna’s know that this is the only way of her granting her sister’s wish even
though she against of her sister’s decision which to put he life into end. This time,
after hearing the all reason why did Anna did that, their mother accepted Kate’s
situation and wish, to die. Maybe her mother realized that love isn’t meant for saving
but also for letting her go in peace and willingness.

After letting Kate go, there has been a huge change in the Fitzgerald family.
Her death wasn’t a holdback to them because the accept Kate’s death willingly as
what they daughter wanted. Thus, it was an opportunity for them, they keep living
their life. Just like every other life it wasn’t always happy, there were also sad but its
part of the journey of every human. We need to let go for us to keep going but it does
not mean that we will forget what we’ve been through but to cherish it. Just like the
vision of Emilio Aguinaldo College Manila for us to pursue the advancement in life
we need to go through the trials in life before we meet our goal which is to achieve
welfare humanity.
