PRACTICE
Answer the following questions. For open-ended questions, answer briefly and
comprehensively (maximum of 5 sentences only).
A. “Martin Heidegger: The Question Concerning Technology Presentation”
1. Who is Martin Heidegger? Is he against science and technology? Support your answer.
- German philosopher Martin Heidegger wrote The Question Concerning Technology, which
explores the fundamental nature of technology. Technology is an instrument, or means to an
end, and human activity, or anthropological activity. Heidegger, however, feels that this
assertion is insufficient. Well, he concedes that the phrase is technically accurate, but it falls
short of accurately defining what technology actually is. We need to have a free relationship
with technology in order to truly understand it. He also said that rather than viewing
technology as a set of tools or assistance, we should look for the true nature of it. This does
not imply that he opposes science and technology, but rather that he wants to focus on
Being. His contribution to philosophy is to rediscover what other philosophers had lost about
the true nature of Being.
5. Man thinks of technology as Instrumentums (tools/aids) instead man should seek technology’s
essence
The metaphysics of technology (Metaphysics - reason for existence such as the cause and effect)
6. When there is instrumentality there is also causality

a. “material/matter” (silver) causa materialis

c. “the process” (the silversmith) causa efficiens
d. “final effect” “ (final reason why it is made “the sacrificial reign”) causa finalis
8. Unconcealment (bringing forth from nothing) is equals to aletheia
9. Technology is a mode of revealing
10. Heidegger describes modern technology as too revealing____TOO REVEALING
11. How is technology revealing?
a. When it encompasses poiesis and techne it can reveal to us
12. Technology’s essence is that it reveals to us the aletheia but modern technology
a. goes beyond causality it even changed the pattern revealing something quite different and
radically new
b. the revealing that rules is challenging which puts to nature the unreasonable demand that it
supplies energy that can be extracted and can be stored

m. instead of allowing nature as to give (es gibt) and reveal on its own term bringing forth, man

view of river, cow, workers)
n. the essence of modern technology is enframing
i. this essence of modern technology lead man to think that the entire world is a
standing reserve
ii. enframing leads to DANGER
B. “Man”
18. Do you agree on how man is being portrayed in the video? Explain your answer.
- Yes, I completely agree with how they depict man in the film given how people are becoming
so greedy with their inventions and creations, which aren't always good to us and might
harm the environment. The Sierra Madre mountain range is currently a pressing issue in the
Philippines, where there is a proposal to build the Kaliwa Dam in the abovementioned
mountain range. Even the environment department, which is supposed to be protecting the
environment, has issued an environmental compliance certificate that permits the
contentious Kaliwa Dam project. It is extremely horrible how individuals, especially those in
power, can become so greedy for money that they will agree to ruin the Sierra Madre
mountain range, which has been defending the region from storms for thousands of years.
19. Is the scenario showed in the video possible to happen? Discuss your answer.
- It is highly likely to occur, particularly given that most people have lost their sense of
morality. They don't consider potential long-term consequences; they simply consider the
money they can make from it. Killing animals, selling endangered or extinct creatures,
dumping plastics around, polluting the seas, and many other things. These are some of the
things that individuals are doing right now without giving future generations a second
thought.
21. If you are given the chance to choose which practices of the villagers do you want to live with?
- I wish to adopt the way of thinking and way of living of the locals. Even though it is peaceful
and unpretentious, the greenery and flowers that surround the village give you a sense of
anticipation as you rise up in the morning. I really like how the elderly man mentioned that it
is good to be alive and that it is not true what other people say about life being difficult. It's
thrilling. And I absolutely agree with it. Living and waking up each day wondering what the
day holds for you is perfect.
