Definitions
a.    Probation - a privilege granted by the court to a person convicted of a crime or criminal
offense to remain with the community instead of actually going to prison
b.    Petitioner - party who petitioned the Supreme Court to review the case
- a person who is asking for court of law’s action
c.    Probationer - a person placed under probation
d.    Probation Officer – supervise, report and investigate the conduct of convicted offender on
probation
e.    Probation Office – it is a place where the probation officer does his work
f.      Probation Order – a law created to establish a probation system, appropriate funds therefor
and other purposes
g.    Absconding Probationer - a probationer who has not reported for initial supervision within
the prescribed period and whose whereabouts could not be found, located or determined
h.    Administration - group of people who are working together to achieved their common goal
i.      Administrator – a person who is responsible for running the organization
j.      Absconding Petitioner - a convicted accused whose application for probation has been
given due course by the court but fails to report to the parole and probation office or cannot be
located within a reasonable period of time
k.     General Inter-Office Referral – type of courtesy investigation to the convicted offender who
are petitioner for probation
l.      Person in authority - person directly vested with jurisdiction
m.   Referral - act of officially sending someone to a person or authority that is qualified to deal
with them
n.    Volunteer Probation Assistant – individual with good standing in the community who are
volunteer to assist the parole and probation officers in the supervision of a number of
probationers and parolees in their respective community
 

2. 5 advantages of community-based corrections or probation


1) spending of the BJMP or the BuCor would be lessen
2) reduce the overcrowding in the cell
3) for family to continuously advice the convicted person
4) reduce the stigma that being built to the convicted individual
5) for the convict person to maintain his state of mind and behavior if they think that he may
become more violent if he is inside the jail
