BSCE 3-C MODULE 3 Mr. Nomer Mangulabnan

III. A. Engage

Picture Analysis

By looking at this picture, what message does it convey?

At a glance you’d find nothing much from this
picture but until your read the bubble, the message it
conveys are the conspiracies that are occuring during
elections and that we should be aware of this and vote for
what we think that would help the country instead. But
from my point of view, this is just a simple occurrence
on politics where you have to fight for your position to
implement your plans for the country which all
politicians has to go through, though I don’t like how the
woman in the picture said that like a threat.

B. Explore

Answer the question below:

Do you think it is acceptable to listen to other people’s conversation when you have
a valid reason for doing so? Explain briefly.

For me I think it is currently debatable, because in the case of private conversations

that has something to do with your private life, then ofcourse it is not acceptable because in
doing so would be a violation in ones privacy. Although, in times where there was a crime or
an event that would help in delivering justice or when listening to conversations that’s about
crimes in the making, the higher authorities would have a way to prevent them or to deal with
them. It would also depend on the context as to what circumstances did they happen to listen
to the conversation whether be it chance or intensional. I also think it is acceptable when the
person you intended to spy on to when they are suspected of terrorism, treason or any
immoral acts, but then again, legalizing such act can cause a lot of problems for the people.
D. Elaborate

Answer the following questions in not less than 5 sentences. (15pts each)

1. What is the principle of the greatest good for the greatest number? In which instances
do you see such manifestation in local setting?
The principle of the greatest good for the greatest number is the action that is the
most beneficial to the largest number of people and it greatly outweighs the negative
consequences of the action if there are any. One of the examples of these are the creation
of the rules that we have to follow, be it at school, work, home, or country there are rules
that we have to follow so that it protects the interests of the greatest amount of people
even if it prevents or prohibits us in doing some things. Like the wearing of uniform, and
although wearing any clothes you like to school could cost less and easy, the purpose of
wearing a uniform is to mainly to prepare us for the future where there are jobs which
requires us to wear a uniform and could train us to take care of it and to prepare it before
the day. It is also to recognize who enters the school or whether there are outsiders that
enters the school for security purposes.

2. Do you agree that happiness is the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain, and
that all actions are directed toward pleasure? Explain your answer using a specific
example.
Although many people would consider pain is bad, and pleasure as good, that would
not always be the case so I do not agree that the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain
could ultimately be directed towards pleasure. There are times when pain is necessary for
ones growth, because pain is a part of an experience and if one do not experience it, then they
would never learn at all. The same could be said to pleasure, where the pleasure of
entertaining yourself for the present instead of doing something productive for the future
could to a lot of stresses, pressure or suffering in the end. When working out, the hardships
we go through and the pain we experience afterwards are pretty hard to deal with, but with
enough effort then you can almost breeze through your everyday chores and perhaps could
lengthen you lifespan or to live a healthier life which would be a form of pleasure. So
avoidance of pain is not really possible because pleasure would not exist without pain.
IV. ASSESSMENT

E.Evaluation

I. Answer the following questions in not less than 5 sentences. (15pts each)

1. What is your reaction to this? “NO VACCINATION, NO EMPLOYMENT” Is this

action valid on the part of the government? Justify your stand on this matter.
In my opinion, this is a very valid action of the government during the pandemic. It is
because the effects of vaccines are already proven, like the fact that the polio is almost
eradicated after the years of vaccination efforts of several countries. It is also not good to risk
employing someone who’s not vaccinated, because all of the other employees are also living
in different places, meaning if they went home after working with someone who might have
been infected by the virus then there is a possibility of spreading it to different parts of the
city or provinces. Even if you are vaccinated, you can still infect others with what you touch
during the work so working with people who are vaccinated could decrease the rate of
infection close to zero. It is also because the government has to do something in order to
prevent the spread and that they won’t be criticized for not strongly recommending vaccines
especially when they were promoting it even before the pandemic started. If the number of
infected people are close to none then there would be a whole lot more people dying because
of the disease, ultimately helping the greater population.

2. Go online and look for an instance where animal rights and welfare can be
considered an issue. What issue can you cite in relation to the concepts of
utilitarianism? Discuss your findings and opinion.
According to Animal Asia, the abuse of animals are pretty wide spread in Asia and
especially on China, where torture of animals are observed just to increase the amount of
people going to the zoo. The smuggling of cats and dogs and also treating them as pests, or
sometimes they are treated as livestock for their meat and for the case of bears, their bile is
collected for medicinal purposes where the most “humane” way of collecting them is cutting
open a passage on the abdomen through which the bile would drip from and could also cause
infection. The Animal Asia was actually one of the first organization dedicated to protecting
animals in China. By protecting the animals and recuing them, the balance of the nature could
be protected like on what happened in the ancient times when cats are considered to be pests
and was hunted down, but then because of that rats multiplied and brought the Bubonic
Plague which claimed a third of the population of Europe. However insignificant a creature
might look, there is a role that they play in the nature in which could contribute to the animals
or even plants around them.
