Components 2: Students will experiment with techniques and media within complete
compositions of two and three dimensions.

Objectives Create raised 2-D designs forming contrasting negative and positive space using 3-D materials.
Develop a feeling of depth or three dimensions within their designs by layering materials in a
strategic manner.

Review of Previous Concepts/New Learning:
Last week we learned how to mix pastel colours using paint. And on Wednesday
everyone worked with their reading buddies to hammer in their nails.
What is the last thing we need to do? Add the string!

Today we are going to add our string to either decorate our eggs or fill in our
designs
Transition: Let class know you will give the bigs instructions so they may begin working and then you will
give the littles instructions.
*Littles may collect their eggs in an organised fashion while I instruct the bigs, ask Mrs. K or Mrs. G to carry
out this.

Bigs: You need to pull your designs up over your nails to get your paper off
before you fill in your designs with string.
*Carefully pull the paper straight up.
Keep your paper until you have your designs fully outlined with string so you
can refer to it. Tie your string to a single nail using a double knot (like tying
your shoes) go around all of your nails to distinguish the design and then begin
filling in the design by wrapping the string around nails in a unique order
allowing them to cross through the inner design space.

String Art Instructions

*** We want light pastel colours for Easter. To make them start with white as
your base and slowly add in a tiny bit of your desired colour until you get the
pale colour you want

1. Select a design and background colour: Decide what picture or

shapes you would like to make and choose a corresponding
background colour.
2. Paint your wood the desired colour
3. Draw your design with a pencil or print out a picture to use.
4. Outline your shape with nails: remember that when you put string
between them it will form very straight lines, the more nails you use
the more detailed your design will be and the smoother curved lines
you will be able to obtain
5. Remove your pattern: If drawn in pencil erase extra lines if paper
remove by pulling up over the nails
6. Outline the shape with string: using embroidery floss, outline the
perimeter of the shape. Begin by tying the floss to the first nail, and
leave a tail for tying off when you are finished.
7. FIll in design: Once you have outlined the shape with string, begin
filling it in by criss crossing and wrapping from nail to nail. There is no
rhyme or reason to this process. Simply go from side to side; top to
bottom and corner to corner, varying the lengths and order randomly.
If you are about to run out of string or would like to start a new colour,
tie the end to a nail. Knot the end tightly and start another bundle of
floss where you want. Repeat this process until the shape is filled into
your liking, then tie off the end when finished.
8. Trim ends remaining from tying the floss to the nails and you are
finished!

Littles: You are going to use your 3 colours of string to make a layered design
and then do a final outline. While using the example egg and writing on the
white board go through how they will design their egg using 4 steps.

the extra example egg. Then draw the remaining steps on the white board as
well as diagrams of how to properly wrap their string around their nails.

Early finishers may do an easter colouring page.

If time permits, allow students to share their work with each other. Littles can
nearly line up and come into the front of the big class room holding their
projects. Ask if anyone would like to give a compliment, only call on students
with hands raised.

Review of Key Concepts/ Clean up:
Highlight what accomplishments were made and concepts were learned during
this project.
● We learned about pastel colours and how to make them
● Safely and effectively worked in pairs to hammer in their nails earning
everyone a black bead for belonging and teamwork
● Were able to use new materials to create beautiful art projects and
decorations to take home for easter

When there is 10 minutes left in class have students clean up from the project
and begin their Friday cleaning duties
● String scraps in the garbage
● Paper outlines in the recycling bins
● Designated duties completed
