Theory Definition

Health Belief Model A tool that scientists use to try and predict health behaviors. It was
originally developed in the 1950s and updated in the 1980s. It’s
based on the theory that a person's willingness to change their
health behaviors is primarily due to their health perceptions.
According to this model, your individual beliefs about health and
health conditions play a role in determining your health-related
behaviors.

Milio’s Framework for Nancy Milio developed a framework for prevention that includes
Prevention concepts of community – oriented, population- focused care. Milio
stated that behavioral patterns of the populations-and individuals
who make up populations – are a result of habitual selection from
limited choices.

Nola Pender’s Health According to Nola J. Pender, Health Promotion and Disease
Promotion Prevention should focus on health care. When health promotion and
prevention fail to anticipate predicaments and problems, care in
illness becomes the subsequent priority. The Health Promotion
Model notes that each person has unique personal characteristics
and experiences that affect subsequent actions. The set of variables
for behavioral specific knowledge and effect have important
motivational significance.

Different Fields in Community Health Nursing

Subspecialty Definition

School Health Nursing The school nurse provides individual and group health teaching and
counseling for and with clients. The school nurse participates in the
 design and development of health curricula. The school nurse promotes
self-care and safety through the education of staff regarding their own
health and that of their students.

Occupational Health someone who “provides for and delivers health and safety programs and
Nursing services to workers, worker populations and community groups. The
practice focuses on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of
illness and injury, and protection from work-related and environmental
hazards. Occupational and environmental health nurses have a
combined knowledge of health and business that they blend with health
care expertise to balance the requirement for a safe and healthful work
environment with a ‘healthy’ bottom line.”

Community Mental Community Mental Health Nurses are specialized Nurses who provide
Health Nursing wholistic nursing services for people with mental health issues, in a
community setting. They provide caring and confidential supports for
clients, using the recovery model for care.

Public Health Nursing Public health nursing is the practice of promoting and protecting the
health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public
health sciences. Evaluations are conducted to determine the extent to
which the intervention has an impact on the health status of individuals
and the population.
