TOPIC: Oil Purifier on Board Ship

1. What is an oil purifier
- Oil Purifier remove oil contaminants in order to prolong oil service life. It is a
process of eliminating solids, gases, or sludge, from oil. It is vital undertaking that
helps in the maintenance of machines.

2. What is the purpose of oil purifier on Board ship?
- A high-speed centrifugal purifier is installed on a ship to get rid of the unwanted
contaminants and pollutants from the lube oil. On ships, separate marine purifiers
are used for fuel and lube oil. Lube oil is purified only through centrifugation while
the fuel oil uses both centrifugation and gravity separation.

3. Submit an image of an oil purifier (Re: ALFA LAVAL MODEL) Alfa Laval

Model

4. Name the different parts of oil purifier and name their functions.
1. Gravity disc -The gravity disc is an important part of the purifier as it maintains the
interface between oil and water. It is done by the inner diameter of the gravity disc.

2. Centripetal impeller (pump) - Oil collected from purifiers will be drawn inside and
delivered by this impeller.
3. Vertical shaft -the Vertical shaft is used to transform the electrical motor output
into rotational motion for rotating the bowl at high speed through spur gear and
horizontal shaft or belt. The material used for vertical shaft construction is an alloy
of steel.
4.

5. Purifier rpm and motor rpm - Motor runs at an rpm of 2000-2500 rpm and
purifier bowl rotates around 15000-18000 rpm. This is done by increased the gear
mechanism of the horizontal shaft.

6. Horizontal shaft - It is connected with the motor via a frictional block
arrangement. Bearings in the bearing housings are provided at two ends of the
shaft. Between them, spiral gear is fitted.

7. Water supply device - Underneath the bowl body cylinder, a water supply device
is fitted to supply low- and high-pressure operating water.

Purifier Parts:
1. Oil Inlet
- Inlet device in an oil/gas separator is used to direct the flow and absorb the flow
momentum of coming stream. However, the inlet has received less attention and
“science” than the gas outlets. Actually inlet device play an important role in
overall performance of a separation vessel.
2. Clean oil outlet
- The clean oil is then discharged through the clean oil outlet.
3. Water outlet
- Water outlet means a discharge opening through which water is supplied to a
fixture, into the atmosphere except into an open tank that is part of the water
supply, to a boiler or heating system, or to any devices or equipment requiring
water to operate but that are not part of the plumbing system.
4. Water pumping dis
- The disc pump helps eliminate clogging, excessive wear, and. The disc pump
helps eliminate clogging, excessive wear, and product damage. It has no
impingement device to damage shear-sensitive products.
5. Discs
- Gravity Disk in Purifier alters the location of the oil-water interface and is
responsible for creating an interface between the oil and water. And further, the
Interface can be shifted inwards or outwards with the correct selection of the
gravity disk in your purifier.
6. Top disc
- Top disc is a leading private sector company specialized in material handling
equipment forklifts for socma , stackers, high pressure washing pumps, etc. by its
well known suppliers and a huge stock of spare parts of worldwide suppliers.
7. Border area between water and oil
- The main component of purifier is correct size gravity disc or dam ring which is
responsible for creating an interface between the oil and water.
8. Bowl periphery
- The bowl can be a solid assembly which retains the separated sludge and operates
non-continuously, or the bowl can be arranged so that the upper and lower parts
separate and the sludge can be discharged while the centrifuge operates
continuously.
9. Bowl Hood
- The bowl hood is the rigid covering for the separator bowl, It also serve as a
protection in case of disc stack. These disc stacks are extremely sharp and can
cause both minor and major lacerations.
10. Distributor
- A shipboard distribution system consists of different component for distribution
and safe operation of the system. They are: Ship Generator consisting of prime
mover and alternator. Main switch board which is a metal enclosure taking power
from the diesel generator and supplying it to different machinery.
11. Oil pumping disc
- The disc pump helps eliminate clogging, excessive wear, and product damage. It
has no impingement device to damage shear-sensitive products. Its patented
pumping system creates a boundary layer of fluid protection that separates the
pump from the fluid, helping to eliminate wear and shear.
12. Regulating disc

- A number of gravity discs, also known as regulating disc are provided with the
purifier whose diameter is changed as per the specific properties of the lube oil.
Flow rate and the temperature of the feed is very vital for purification.
2. Marine fuel oil centrifugal Purifier on ship centrifuge.

-Marine Fuel Oil Purifier is one the most important Auxiliary machinery on board
a ship. It is also known as a centrifugal purifier or Centrifuge. After Bunkering,
Fuel oil is to firststorage tanks and then to the settling tank for gravity separation
so that over a gradual period solids impurities such as sludge, dirt, etc., will settle
out at the bottom of the tank. Then Fuel oil is transferred through the centrifugal
purifier to the service tank for daily operational use.
